I for one whenever I play along always try to associate the number selected with the prize shown... (e.g. Luggage under # 14, I think "Luggage needed for a 14 day vacation", or "Refrigerator under #23, I associate 23 degrees being cold, freezing even, like a Refrigerator...of course that logic could work with all 25 numbers on the board!

Do you or anyone remember a so-called “memory expert” who made the TV rounds back in the 70s? I’m sure he was a guest on Wonderama for one. Your strategy was what he suggested.

Not sure if it’s the same person or not but there was a Harry Lorayne who hawked a “Memory Power” on Amazing Discoveries in the early 1990s.

I would have misremembered the spelling. I believe Eye Guess gave out his home study course to contestants that flubbed some number of questions consecutively.

First national TV appearance was in 1958.

He built a house by himself? Why would he keep that a secret?

Wasn’t him—next contestant (a female—at the time females weren’t known for housebuilding).

In the current Family Feud, once they get to the Sudden Death face off (if nobody reaches 300 points), what happens if both contestants miss?  I've never seen it but I'd imagine they'd probably edit it out of the show rather than going back to the heads of families for the answer.

Does Supermarket Sweep engage a compliance service such as Sullivan?

Can confirm that at least on the Canadian version - please watch on CBC M-Th at 7:30 pm / 8 NT or on CBC Gem as I like my job - that if they wiff at the podium it does get chucked out.

The famous "Chicken" answer wasn't the first Sudden Death question for that game, for example:

Ryan.

Thanks Ryan - that was great.  I understand why (due to time constraints), but too bad they had to edit all of that out :)

I don't know what the '90s/'00s version did, but the 2020s version used ABC's in-house standards and practices department.

Speaking of that version and unannounced rules, there were certain expensive products in the store that had a limit of one per customer, and taking more than one would incur a penalty. Home viewers didn't know about the one-per-customer rule or the penalty until a season two episode in which the team's final total was so low, Leslie had to explain how that had happened. Which prompted a number of online comments to the effect of "I didn't know that was a rule!"

I've only seen one time when both face-off participants missed and Steve turned to the heads of the families to continue the question, a few years ago. It occurred near the end of a season and my completely baseless guess is that maybe they were starting to run low on sudden death questions.

But yeah, my suspicion (which I cannot prove) is that on the U.S. version as well, sudden death questions that fail at the initial face-off get edited out.

It might have changed over time. I seem to remember they would dump main game questions where the first 2 people didn't give an answer on the board but later changed that, probably because they lost too much material.

In STYD's bonus round, you should probably trade at least five of the items if you want a chance at winning.
