"Money In The Blank" vs. "Finish Line"
« on: September 29, 2025, 03:48:31 PM »
Shoutout to the "Finish Line alternate pilot" post in the Video & Audio Clips section for inspiring this question.

It's no secret that Bob Stewart loved ripping off himself for game show ideals and arguably his best format (Pyramid) wasn't immune to this. Mr. Stewart made plenty of Pyramid variants, but out of all of time, the two more popular ones (In the majority of the forum's eyes, at least) were Money In The Blank and Finish Line.

That said, which of the above Pyramid knockoffs do you think is better (or at very least, had a better shot of getting on the air) and why?

Which was better? For me, Money in the Blank. It offered something new to the space, in the form of incomplete sentences and buzz-in gameplay, with enough breathing room to have fun with wacky clues and responses -- something Pyramid rarely took advantage of, with Dick Clark at the podium. I'm ignoring the Three on a Match-inspired endgame, however, which was a curveball that I ultimately didn't enjoy. We can follow it because we're so familiar with Three on a Match. But seen with fresh eyes, it had to look very strange.

Which had a better shot of getting on the air? Probably Finish Line. Its gameplay immediately looks familiar, and the rhythm of the poems gives the audience a change to digest what's going on. And Poetry in Motion sure looks exciting.

But as discussed in those threads, playing Finish Line with the Pyramid game structure didn't help in milking the humor. The fun poems could be integrated into a different game; but watching people work with most of the information being given to them wasn't satisfying for me.
