How much sway do the affiliates have now versus back in the day?

Who knows. Sinclair owns entirely too many ABC stations. (Why, it's almost like there should be a law that limits the number of...wait...<checks earpiece>....oh.)

But consider Seattle: Let's say Disney could and DID pull ABC affiliation from Sinclair, just hypothetically. Who serves Seattle as the ABC affiliate now? KONG? They're Tegna-gonna-be-Nexstar, that's no better. KSTW? Uh, maybe, though as a CBS O&O that would be a little weird. KZJO is a FOX O&O so weird for the same reasons. That leaves KFFV, channel 44 (and right now you're saying "TIL channel 44 in Seattle is a thing!"), which right now is hosting seven Weigel Broadcasting digital subchannels.

Aren't duopolies fun!

I'm guessing it will be that "National News Desk" MAGA-circle-jerk thing that pops up after NXT over on the CW station.

Called it with an asterisk: they let the 11:00P news show run over and THEN switched to Plastic MAGA News.

Fortunately Jimmy's first two segments (his extended monologue) were on teh YouTubes and are very much worth your time if you didn't or were unable to see them.

The great thing about growing up with a dad who worked in radio is I got to learn all about the Telecommunications Act of 1996. What a great piece of legislature that was.

Doesn’t Fox still also have Q13 as well as 22?  Duopoly there as well.
Your mention of KFFV brings to mind what cbs did in Detroit and what nbc did in Boston years ago.  Find some obscure signal and start from scratch.  Always the possibility of what abc just did in Miami with a d-2 on the Fox station.

Technology levels the playing field now more than ever.  And no audience is all that huge any more. The question is more how low is down versus how high is up.

I love Seattle quite a bit myself.  Thank goodness baseball and football are doing well for distractions

Wait? the Mariners are good again!?!?!?

I guess in a couple of years, they will be crap for another 20 years.  I learned all that from this:

Here's a fun.one, from Tim Burke: Multiple Sinclar stations apparently had no interest in doing even more work for no additional pay, so instead of tacking on another half-hour to their 11/10 o'clock newscasts, they just left the newscast's closing title card on screen with dead air for 30 minutes. So now Sinclair's not only going to war with its network, it's also fighting its own stations. And I encourage them to continue.

/for all this year has made me put up with, the least it can give me is a Mariners-Brewers World Series

My brother in law to be won some style points by telling me about the Dorktown Diaries, even though I knew. Many summers were made tolerable by listening to Dave Niehaus and Rick Rizzs irrespective of the on-field ineptitude.

As the workers compensation reps for Mariners, Seahawks and Kraken it certainly makes following the teams very different. Many times the game is coming down the stretch and I am praying for expiry without injury.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.

Sinclair is also fighting with a new browser-based playout system designed more for OTT and FAST than linear. When my station switched last year, we found that it's very hard to make quick changes to the playlist like it was with our old system (Harris, if you're in the know and curious). We got hubbed in May (and shitcanned because of it) and while we'd overcome a lot of our teething issues through trial and error, there was a lot that the hub had to learn on its own and situations they had to plan for. Even now, sources are misrouted, ABC slate airs before World News comes on, and commercials loop over and over again. They even had the previous day's newscast from our cable channel cutting in over General Hospital one afternoon.

That half hour of slate (and the 11th-hour decision not to run the Charlie Kirk special) sounds very much like one of the hub's many automation gremlins. And like you, I am all here for them.

Yeah, KCPQ (13) is the main Fox, and KZJO is the 22 you mention. Sinclair snapping up KUNS happened way back when it was a Telemundo and therefore off most people's radar, but they turned it into the CW affiliate after KSTW gave that up in 2023. So pretty much all of Seattle is duopolied in some form or fashion. The radio (for as much as that matters anymore; the Kraken don't even reference it when they present their broadcasts) is just as bad.

Was that just your station or did Sinclair call it off wholesale? I didn't hear about this. (Obviously I had no plans to watch it.)

All of them. I'll have to ask my sources what the truth is since the announcement about the switch was made less than 15 minutes before air.

Oh my. I'll have to look that up. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there.

The timestamp on the tweet announcing the special was getting kicked to YouTube was 11:24pm Eastern. It then racked up a whopping 26,000 views over the weekend. Now to take a big sip.of.ginger beer and see what kind of online numbers Jimmy Kimmel's Tuesday night monologue did.
