BUZZR Q1 2025
Chelsea Thrasher:
Match Game 90 will air from 8:30am to 11:00am (!!!) for at least the week of the 13th and will run the first 25 shows straight through, one week per day.
A fantastic strategy when you're running out of things to run is totally to burn through 10% of the run in a single week, but I think this is actually my favorite version of the show so I'm also really contented to see it. Maybe not that much of it, but...

I'll set up the VLC accordingly. Thanks, Chelsea! I know this is considered "fightin' words" around here, but I do prefer Schafer's Shafer's version of MG to Rayburn's. So, I'm looking forward to this marathon. Granted, he's no Gene, but I do like his biting Northwestern wit & how it added to the show (He is the one who dubbed Bill Nye, "Bill Nye: The Science Guy", you know?).
As for WHY they're airing this marathon in the first place, I've heard some theories: It could be a launch marathon to celebrate the show's addition to the regular lineup, it's in honor of CNR's birthday on January 13th, or as a lead-up to the show's 35th anniversary in 2025 (though that's not until July). However, I'm liking Chelsea's theory of "After nearly a decade, we're running low on content, and we just don't have the funds to acquire shows outside of the Goodson library."

Which is fantastic and 90% of the reason why this version of the show is my favorite. Rayburn is overwhelmingly THE 'popular' host I absolutely just do not care for, and he's a lot of the reason I dislike the 70s version of the show as much as I do.
I think MG90 could have been something special (quality-wise) had Convy been able to be the host. His pilot week is absolutely my favorite set of Match Game episodes ever produced. It'd still have gotten cancelled in 1991 regardless but might have stood half a chance of CBS showing interest after all.
Also, learning from Adam that 'Yes, the contestants and celebrities didn't always see the Match-Up answers in the same order and were told this beforehand' completely papered over the thing that bugged me most as a viewer, and I wish they'd mentioned that from time to time. (I don't remember it really coming up when GSN ran the show in the early 2000s)

I've always found 75-early 77 to be MG's peak. Question writing was very good and they booked panels that worked really well with each other, and this was before Dawson went full Dawson. 90 was alright but Ross couldn't seem to steer the show the right way when it got weird. Bert (from his time on Tattletales) would have been excellent.

Didn't they kind of do that with Password at one point, maybe 2-3:30PM? I think Tattletales rounded out that block.

FYI, the 5x daily Match Game '90 marathon remains during the week of 1/20.
