Interestingly, Fleming (who was almost certainly bitter about how things were going down) mounted a bit of a campaign to salvage his reputation.  There are several newspaper articles from 1984 where he claims he was considered but took himself out of the running, pretty much for the reasons mentioned in the OP.  So it's not like this was a made up story told to you by your bowling buddy.  It appears to be a made up story that Fleming told to save face.

I guess what I'm saying is if you're "researching" a book about game shows but all you really want to find are the scandalous bits, once you find an article like that with your newspapers.com subscription, you're probably not going to dig too much deeper.
