TPIR Announce Question (for Randy?)
gaubster2:
I used to work in radio and when going on the air, I would turn on and "pot up" (or turn up the "volume" on) the microphone while speaking. Who controls whether the microphone at the announce position is on or off? Does Randy (or Burton) do this....or someone in the control room?
A question for Randy....do you wear the headphones or not when announcing Price? Also, what's the purpose of this?? To hear your voice inflection or to get cues, perhaps? (BTW, I hope you get the permanent announcing gig on Price!) Any chance of you getting any on-screen time like Rod and Johnny used to? I've heard about the "policy" that Freemantle has about announcers appearing on air....but they did show Paul Boland after Bob thanked him for filling in for Rod some months back.
I've always been curious about all of this!
Merry Christmas Everyone!!
Chris

The guy in the control room at the audio board would be in charge of opening and closing all mics when so ordered by the director.
I'll let Randy answer the headset question (actually I'm pretty sure he has before, in fact I may have been the one to ask it), but I would think he would at least need to have a bug in his ear so he can pay attention to director chatter.
EDIT: Just as an aside, it occured to me a moment ago as I listened to Randy do the ticket plug on today's show, that while Randy was good from the start, his delivery has improved even MORE since he's been doing it regularly. Randy, you sounded incredibly comfortable behind the mic today and they would be foolish not to give you the gig full-time. Here's to hoping that 2004 is the Year Of Randy West! :)

I believe the "cans" are strictly for cues. When Rod Roddy started on Price, he wore the headphones, but soon had the flow of the show down enough where he didn't need them.
Johnny O never had them, anywhere. He had such a knack for knowing when he was supposed to open his mouth.
Randy, who's responsible for giving you cues? Bart or Fred?

DJs wear headphones because the music being played right next to them is incredibly loud, maybe Randy just wears headphones to keep the sound out?
I really hope Randy gets the job. Burton is quite boring and has absolutly no enthuism and energy. Randy is full of energy and very fun. How long is Randy's current announcing tenor going to last? I wonder if Burton reads the board also, it would be funny to see how jealous he is that almost everyone here probably likes Randy the best.

Huh?
No, that is not why DJ's wear headsets. DJ's wear headsets because the monitor speakers in the studio can't be on (and in fact, are automatically muted) at the same time the mic is live, or else you would get feedback. Therefore, the jock wears headsets so he can still hear what the hell he's doing with the mixing board while the mic is live and the monitors are off.
Further, the last word I would use to describe Burton is "unenthusiastic". I'm no fan of his work, but I respect him as a professional, and if he DID read this board, I think it's likely he wouldn't have enjoyed the long and successful career he has in Hollywood if he couldn't handle a little criticism from a few people who for the most part have never spoken into a mic professionally in their lives.
