Drew already missed a few tapings in late October due to illness. Granted, it was just a few tapings, and IIRC they made up the episodes by adding some extra tape dates. Should Drew come down with a severe illness that would cause him to miss multiple weeks of shows, I don't see why a guest host couldn't step in.

Many hosts have had subs for some weeks due to illness (Ludden, Barker?), but is this a forgotten practice?

The only glaring problem that I see with that they would have to learn (x times 6) games (where x = number of shows getting a sub)...very hard to do, unlike when Dennis did the show in '74, because he already knew the games.

If they abosolutely had to go with someone whose last name wasn't Barker, I'd say Doug Davidson, since he's had experience hosting several of the show's games (yes I do realize it was 14 yrs ago).

Actually, it was the other way around -- they added some tapedates, and then Drew got sick during them.

His limited repertoire of games. The only game he did on those shows, IIRC, that he didn't do on the syndicated show was Hi-Lo. Otherwise, it was just Any Number/Five Price Tags/Double Prices/Bonus Game/Clock Game/Most Expensive/Grocery Game. (Over the course of his run, the only later games they added were Lucky Seven and Shell Game--once again, IIRC.)

The games used in the first season were Any Number, Bonus Game, Double Prices, Grocery Game, Clock Game, Double Bullseye (which, based on people's recollections and on what isn't accounted for in the show's stats, was probably played twice), Five Price Tags, Most Expensive, and Range Game.

In the second season, they added Lucky Seven and removed Double Prices and Most Expensive; in the third, they added Shell Game and Money Game, reinstated Most Expensive, and played Double Prices a single time; in the fourth, they added 1 Right Price and Race Game; and in the fifth, they added Cliff Hangers, Danger Price, 3 Strikes, Dice Game, and Hurdles.
