MG 11a Weekends Heads-Up
« on: October 27, 2007, 11:26:15 AM »
Didn't catch this past Sunday's episode, so I'm not sure exactly where we are in the week, but this just may be the week of MG with the most hosts on one panel ever: Peter Marshall, Dick Martin, Elaine Joyce, Bill Cullen, Betty White. Oh, and Brett Somers too.

Quite a week!

IIRC, today's episode was the Monday episode of that week, so there's plenty time to fire up those DVR's!

An episode with Marshall aired last Sunday.  What aired today was probably the Tuesday episode of the week.

Sounds like the one noted in the first Encyclopedia. What year was this?
"I just wanna give a shoutout to my homies in their late-30s who are watching this on Paramount+ right now, cause they couldn't stay up late enough to watch it live!"

Now celebrating his 21st season on GSF!

Looks like the 13th week of 1980.

Strikes me as kinda odd, having Marshall on, since according to Dixon's page, Squares didn't finish its daytime run until June 1980. Is my memory being selective or was having non-G/T-hosts on MG a more common thing than I'm thinking?

Not literally the 13th week of 1980, he meant "13th week of the 1980-81 season," so the network version would have been done by then. But then that raises the new question of "Why would they have him on to promote the syndicated Squares?" It might have been running against them in some markets. Hmm...

But yeah, Peter's an oddity for Match Game. Every other emcee who did the show had a G-T connection. They didn't even have non-G-T hosts from CBS to plug other shows on the network (no Dick Clark, no Jack Barry, no Jim Lange, etc.)

Marshall was also on in one of the final few weeks of the 1979-80 season, at which point HSq was still in its daytime run (and in twice-a-week syndie).  So he certainly was an anomaly.

On the station side, it makes some sense, at least in LA.  In the 79-80 season, "Match Game" and "H'wood Squares" were on KNBC in the daytime and KABC had the prime access versions.

As far as MC's who never hosted a G-T show on the MG panel, Dick Gautier and Arte Johnson come to mind.

Barry, of course, would have to be reminded to not to show his card to the player while Gene's back was turned.
