While watching GSN: The Network For Games, I've noticed that just before the last segment of the show in progress as we're being told which three shows are coming up next, people appear on the left side of the screen. Who are they?

I've seen various people - some of whom are GSN personalities (I've seen Chuck Woolery plus a few of the originals hosts in various spots), and some of whom I'd guess are random actors they got to stand there and "act" for 3 seconds

No, the creepiest ones they ever did were those two-or-three second silent ID's they'd put in between commercials. Thank Gawd they don't do that any more.

When exactly did they start this anyway?  Although I haven't had GSN for a couple of years now, a friend of mine does.  I noticed this last time I was there and really wondered when/why the change was made.  Is this part of another "makeover" I heard about recently?

Yeah, it started with the start of the "Get Into the Game" campaign.

BTW, Don, "The Network for Games" slogan seems to have gone by the wayside--the press releases I've seen lately have the channel's first reference as "GSN:  Get Into the Game."

So I guess they'll likely never refer to themselves as "Game Show Network" again.

To my understanding they still refer to themselves as Game Show Network in all legal documents, etc., as that's still the network's actual name.  But in terms of on-air branding, that ship's most likely sailed.

Switching *back* to "Game Show Network" in their on-air branding would amount to the network admitting they made a mistake in the change in the first place; admitting a mistake, unless legally obligated (such as in a news piece), has never really been one of the TV industry's strong suits.   To them it's more about spinning your screwup in a way that doesn't make management look like idiotic asshats.

From a press release I read a while back, the people that appear during the "Coming Up" bumpers are supposed to be typical (yet somewhat stereotypical) contestants of the era of which the announced show comes.

For example, they show a guy with gelled-up hair and a Members Only jacket when Press Your Luck is announced as coming up at 10:30, yet they show an African-American woman with a large pointy collar and an Afro bopping to music when Match Game is announced as coming up at 3:30.

Based on what I read from GSN when this new campaign started, I assume it's an effort to hype the "average Joe/Jane" aspect of game shows.

That effort contains large amounts of fail:
