Today is the 30th anniversary of The Price Is Right being an hour long show, so that means it's also the 30th birthday of the Big Wheel.

Of course, it marked the first time cash bonuses were given out (unless the perfect bid bonus was already initiated).

The earliest playings of Grocery Game in 1972-73 had $100 in cash given to the player. They kept it if either they won the game or ran out of products before reaching $6.75, no?

The Showcase Showdown made its debut during the experimental week of hour-long shows, but with a much smaller wheel. When was that, Zach?

I'm not Zach, but I'm trying to make a conscious effort to be more like him. Maybe Santa will come this year.

Didn't those air during the "Anniversery Week", in September of 1975?

Thanx for the link. That was some weird lookin wheel!

Thank goodness they gave us a complete overhaul of the wheel before it was a permanent feature. I like how the wheel has the element of surprise with a good chunk of the denominations 'hidden' while the wheel is spinning -- unless you have the entire wheel amounts memorized.

And the sound effects from the wheel were a little over the top back then as well. It sounded just like the Jeopardy board sfx open from the Trebek version.
