Wink on PBS Summer Special
« on: May 19, 2004, 12:28:26 PM »
I've been sitting on this waiting for the airdate to get closer, and it's starting to feel like summer, so here goes. T. J. Labunski who produced the very successful rock and roll revival shows for PBS has taped another in Atlantic City featuring our own Wink. The Winkster had a BALL; here's edits of some of what he told me about it:

>>... "MAGIC MOMENTS: THE BEST OF FIFTIES POP" will air on all PBS stations this summer, in June, July or August - depending on a particular station's schedule for Pledge Week

I perform my narrative "Deck of Cards", and host a game show bit with celeb panelists Rip Taylor, Dr. Joyce Brothers, and Brett Sommers.  I cannot recall ever getting a standing ovation prior to this reading of the narrative that's followed me my entire career.  So it was really exciting, and rewarding.

Pat Boone was host - and the guests performing live with a 30 piece orchestra were: The McGuire Sisters, Patti Page, The 4 Lads, The 4 Aces, The 4 Coins, The 4 Preps, The Crew Cuts, Gogi Grant, Don Cherry, Mel Carter, The Chordettes, The Platters, The Diamonds, Debbie Reynolds

With clips by: The Lennon Sisters, Frankie Laine, Fess Parker, Joni James, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney, Dean Martin, Johnnie Ray, Kay Starr, Tommy Edwards...<<

For those who know the music of the era, this really is a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of stars. I used to ask Wink about his appearance on the hugely popular Ed Sullivan Show performing his big hit "Deck of Cards" LIVE. It was his first trip to NY and an overwhelming experience. His daughter found a kinescope of the gig and it's magical. Can't wait to see him do it on PBS this summer.

Meanwhile Mikohn Gaming finally unveiled the new slot machine "WINK'S SURVEY OF AMERICA" at a gaming trade show - with luck it will hit casino floors soon.

Just passing along the good news that there IS life after Boggle, Jumble and Shuffle    ;-)
