Vegas's Tropicana Hotel to be demolished
« on: May 09, 2023, 06:48:00 PM »
According to Howard Stutz, the site will become the new home of the A's once they leave Oakland. Las Vegas Gambit and the first couple years of Brady's LMAD taped at the Trop.

The Tropicana hotel was also the original home for Dealer's Choice.

The Oakland A's are definitely moving to Toronto.
The Oakland A's are definitely moving to Chicago.
The Oakland A's are definitely moving to Denver.
The Oakland A's are definitely moving to San Jose.
The Oakland A's are definitely moving to Fremont.
The Oakland A's are definitely staying in Oakland and getting a new ballpark.
The Oakland A's are definitely staying in Oakland and getting a new ballpark, no not that one, different spot this time.
As of less than three weeks ago, the Oakland Athletics were definitely moving to Las Vegas because they had entered into a "binding" agreement to purchase a different plot of land than the Tropicana for the new ballpark.

What I'm saying is, believe the Tropicana is heading out and the A's are moving in no sooner than the explosives get detonated, and probably not before the first pitch gets thrown.

I agree with this. I'm very skeptical of anything actually happening with the team in Las Vegas.

The Tropicana is also where a lot of us participated in TCONA, The Trivia Championships of North America, for several years.

It's also home to Rich Little's little residency, which last I heard was still going semi-strong.  Someone should probably tell him.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

FYI, here is what I came up with as far as games shows shot in Vegas:

THE TROPICANA -- Soon to be demolished???

DEALER'S CHOICE -- partial run
LAS VEGAS GAMBIT -- entire run
LET'S MAKE A DEAL (Brady) -- first season

THE RIVIERA -- Demolished

HOLLYWOOD SQUARES (Marshall) -- Partial syndicated run

(The original) LAS VEGAS HILTON -- Now known as The Westgate Las Vegas

LET'S MAKE A DEAL (Hall) -- Partial syndicated run

CAESAR'S PALACE -- Still in business

CAESAR'S CHALLENGE

Unless I am missing a show or two,  if/when the Trop comes down, Caesar's will be the only current named hotel that once hosted a televised game show.  I put an asterisk next to The Westgate, as it was the LV Hilton up until about 10 years ago.

Caesar's Palace is still around, but the Circus Maximus theater (where CC was taped) is now defunct.

Where was the tent where Millionaire was taped located during the Vegas years?

WWTBAM recorded its first Vegas season inside Bally's before moving to "Caesars Entertainment Studios" -- aka "the giant tent behind Bally's."

Catch-21 also taped its Vegas episodes in said tent.

If we include theme weeks, Wheel taped its Vegas episodes at the Venetian.

J! taped at the 2009 CES held in Vegas, and unveiled its new set.

TPiR taped its 30th Anniversary primetime special at the Rio in Vegas as well.
It was Bob Barker. He was eating a bologna and cheese-ball sandwich.

That tent is where most of GSN and/or BattleBots lives now.
This signature is currently under construction.

Unless there's a joke I'm missing, I believe the only GSN productions to use the space were the revival of Catch 21 and the first season of Get a Clue.

Didn't Master Minds and/or America Says tape in Vegas at one point? I remember conversing with someone else from the Forum about how GSN's shows looked like they were shot in an airplane hangar, and we came to the conclusion that that was the tent.

I thought Best Ever Trivia Show might have, but I couldn't confirm. My bigger rebuttal is that the pandemic-and-subsequent seasons of America Says, Master Minds, Common Knowledge, Tug of Words, etc. were all in SoCal. I believe Get a Clue season 2 was also supposed to be Vegas, but ended up in LA as well.
