Just saw a woman give up a nice kitchen on LMAD
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

All earnings over $600 are taxed.  I could never do Let's Make a Deal, even though I'm ineligible, because I would quite literally rather have the zonk than the tax burden kitchen set or the pain in the ass of selling (which will almost never go for face value) THEN paying taxes.  Also for kitchens specifically, approximately 15% of people nationwide (SIGNIFICANTLY more in large cities) are renters, and if you are, a kitchen is utterly useless. If I'm on the show, I don't need that.  Let me trade off for possibly something better.

There are some prizes these shows give away that have no interest for me.  For example - a hot tub.  If I won one on The Price is Right, when I'm filling out the forms I'd forfeit it.

Having said that, it does surprise me sometimes when I see people win nice things and give it up to go for the Big Deal, but I think Chelsea explains it quite well.

Chelsea makes an interesting point. When I watch the ‘84 version, people are still very excited to win appliances or kitchen sets, which makes me wonder what the ratio of homeowners to renters was back then. Considering housing was much more affordable, I imagine it was close(r) to even.

Our townhouse currently has newer stainless steel appliances, but it’s been a few occasions where I watched LMAD or TPIR and was more excited about the kitchen than the new car. I just figured it meant I was getting older. :P
"I just wanna give a shoutout to my homies in their late-30s who are watching this on Paramount+ right now, cause they couldn't stay up late enough to watch it live!"

Now celebrating his 21st season on GSF!

It's all situational.  I'd pass up a hot tub because it's a pain in the tuchas for a person with a prosthetic leg to use.  The kitchen would be a nice upgrade as it's been 14 years since I got mine.

I wonder what percent of boat winners decline it because they aren't near water, but also the general cost of boat ownership.

I agree, many people seem to be small-campfire at best about winning stuff.

As best as I can tell, American Gladiators' Blaze has not been a contestant and had the opportunity to win stuff.

I'd be lukewarm over a kitchen as well.

A boat's a boat, but the mystery box can be anything! It could even be a boat! We'll take the box!

Eh...at least they aren't quite at the level of that guy who played Race Game sometime in the '90s and openly complained that he didn't need any of the prizes, promptly earning the contempt of Bob and boos from the audience.

It was Bob Barker. He was eating a bologna and cheese-ball sandwich.
