Porn as a game show?

From the 3/1/04 edition of Multichannel News, in the "Through the Wire" column...

**********************************************

Reality TV Pays

American Idol and even the Lingerie Bowl have nothing on this reality competition. In Demand LLC hopes it's created a lucrative franchise around Silhouette Productions LLC's new pay-per-view series, Can You Be A Pornstar?

The eight-episode skein pits four women a week in various "competitions," including photo shoots, interviews and "surprises," for the chance to win a contract with a porno studio and $100,000.

Viewers "vote" for a winner each week from the show, which teasingly promises "uninhibited nudity and sizzling sexuality."

Early estimates were the Jan. 8 premiere, and several replays, drew around 50,000 buys. At $9.95 per biweekly event, In Demand and operators could rake in some nice change.

The current version, on the event channel, is rated TV-MA, but look for more explicit encore presentations on adult channels later in the year.

Let the jokes begin.

Well, it wouldn't be the first R-rated game show; the Playboy channel had "Everything Goes" and "Dueling for Playmates" in the past.

(deleting all other jokes I can possibly think of, and there are SO many)
This isn't a plug, but you can ask me about my book.

Photo shoots? Interviews? If they're gonna see which one of these chickies wants to do pr0n, then there is ONE THING and ONE THING ONLY that I want to see how good she is at doing.

Okay. Two things. Well, maybe three. Sometimes there isn't a guy in the scene. :)

That must be why it's (smirk) a biweekly event.

Actually, I didn't think USA Network's version was that bad. On European TV, some game shows do have nudity of both sexes: Germany has Wahre Liebe and Finland used to have its own TV version of strip poker.

I'm not offended by nudity per se, but any U.S. game show where genitalia or female breasts are exposed would have to be restricted to a digital cable channel that children are not likely to watch.

I suppose, at a pinch, you could count all the Big Brothers and the like which have featured sexual content in the past; I'm not sure if any of the houses have yet featured sexual content in which the contestants have overtly played to the camera, but I think that at least the vast majority of European versions have featured contestants making love to one another. (FWIW, the British regular series shows are believed to have reached second and third bases, but we had a one-week Teen Big Brother and two contestants ended up fumbling under the duvets there.)

We've seen short clips from around the world of what Big Brother night vision camera sex looks like. My favourite was a Norwegian clip of a lady in a bedroom on her own, fairly obviously masturbating reasonably vigorously, only for another housemate to pop her head into the room and ask if the lady in bed was well. The lady in bed claimed not to be feeling well and asked to be left alone.

Amused me, anyhow
