Scrabble NBC question
« on: June 02, 2022, 04:53:41 PM »
During the crossword round, if a player didn't know the word at the start of play, they would draw two tiles revealing 2 possible letters that might appear in the answer.

My question is, if after the letters are selected and the player then knows the answer, can they do so or were they required to place at least one selected letter?

You must attempt to place a tile after drawing. That’s why going for bonus money carried a risk if more than one stopper was lurking in the rack.

Pretty sure you had to commit. Players tried to answer in-between and have been told otherwise.

It was always after placing a letter, after a change in control (stopper or missolve), or at the beginning of the word when a contestant could buzz in. They were lenient in the time (for a time, a quick honk-honk was just a prompt to draw letters -- I believe they would allow a solve soon after it) but when you dropped the letter tile, the solve period was closed.

And, in speedword, you have to wait until Chuck says go.

You sure about that? I'm pretty sure I've seen players hit the plunger before go.

Speedword, not the Sprint. You can jump in on just the clue in the Sprint (and people have successfully, but rarely, done it).
