80 years of Game Shows book now available
« on: September 14, 2021, 06:54:25 PM »
This book came out just this week:

https://www.amazon.com/80-Years-TV-Game-Shows/dp/B09CG94RV2/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=%2280+years+of+game+shows&qid=1631657261&sr=8-1

The one shown has the late Alex Trebek pictured, but a close source told me there is at least one other cover, featuring Bob Barker.

A book that claims to cover 80 years of game show that’s 96 pages long. That’s about all I need to know.

Chapter 6: The 1990s

There's no need to discuss this.

Chapter 7: 1999–the 2000s

Hells bells, for as little as seven bucks, you can buy a book that's quadruple the length, covers that much history, plus an extra 20 years!

Calling it a "book" seems sort of generous. This is merely one of those "newsstand specials" put out by Bauer Media, the makers of Closer and Woman's World magazines. Something like this is called a "flat" since it carries no advertising pages. Don't expect anything authoritative or exhaustive here, best you can hope for is some great rare pics.

Sorry, I should've been a little more careful, but I thought with the item being listed under "books," and as "paperback," at amazon.com it would've been more like that.  I'll do better next time.

Its one thing to misidentify Anitra Ford as Janice Pennington...quite another to present another pic of the show from August 26, 1972 (?) when an off screen voice read the prices (??) to determine the winner of the showcase showdown (???).

The one shown has the late Alex Trebek pictured, but a close source told me there is at least one other cover, featuring Bob Barker.

Also saw a Peter Marshall cover in the magazine rack today. Didn't buy.

I bought the one with the Barker cover.  In the section about TPiR the publisher makes the common mistake of calling the Showcases the Showcase Showdown.  I've not read every chapter yet, but I doubt I'll learn anything I don't already know.

I'd just seen a copy picturing Regis Philbin on the cover.

Did the Alex Trebek one mention him hosting the short-lived Hollywood Triangles? Based on what I've seen in this thread, that wouldn't surprise me.

Bumping the thread: if you have the Libby library app, this magazine is available to borrow.
