Trebek's "Jeopardy" episode count

So there's this thread in the Jeopardy Twitterverse right now about how many episodes of the show did Alex Trebek host. Below is the link if you want to see it for yourself.

Three part question: What do you think of her logic? What is the "true" number of episodes Trebek hosted (If there's any more of an appropriate place to debate this...) and is this the same logic as to why syndicated Wheel Of Fortune never adds in the number of shows Sajak did when the show was still on NBC? (Pretty sure he's done about 8,500-9,000 episodes if you add in the daytime count).

Kevin Prather:
Just like any other count or list, there's no one right answer. If you want to count it for your purposes, you count it. If you don't, you don't.

If only there were some sort of Archive you could point your browser towards that was devoted to th3 nightly job of putting contestants in Jeopardy.

Over on jboard.tv, Mark Barrett calculated the 8,244 figure this way:

--- Quote ---(Monday's) ep. is 8341.

Take away 30 for Ken and that is 8311.
Take away 1 for Mike and that is 8310.

Take away 65 for the rerun episodes of Season 1 that were given new numbers and that is 8245. Notice that Season 2 begins with ep. 261 although S1 did not have 260 eps.

Take away 1 for Pat Sajak hosting 4/1/97 and that gets it to Mike's announced 8,244 for Alex.
--- End quote ---

In addition to the clip show Claire McNear mentioned, I also note that during the Watson/Rutter/Jennings competition, one of the games was split over two episodes.

The archive is incomplete for the early seasons, so not terribly useful for definitively stating the total number of episodes.
