Jeopardy! Announces First Team Tournament
« on: September 07, 2018, 10:38:24 PM »
Jeopardy! has announced its first ever tournament, comprised of all-star players on teams. Complete details are at the website.

Unlike any other Jeopardy! tournament, where contestants compete individually, 18 players will be divided into teams of three: one captain and two selected players. All three members of the team will play during each match, but not at the same time. Teams will have to strategize and decide who will play each round: Jeopardy!, Double Jeopardy! and Final Jeopardy! Teams will advance based on point totals at the end of the game (with a wild card slot up for grabs). The top three teams will compete for a $1 million prize in the finals.

The team captains are as follows: Colby Burnett, Buzzy Cohen, Julia Collins, Ken Jennings, Austin Rogers and Brad Rutter.

They will select from this A-list roster of players: Leonard Cooper, Roger Craig, Jennifer Giles, Ben Ingram, Matt Jackson, Alex Jacob, Larissa Kelly, Alan Lin, David Madden, Pam Mueller, Monica Thieu and Seth Wilson.

All 18 contestants will participate in a Facebook Live draft event hosted by Alex Trebek, set to take place Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m. ET. The tournament will air over the course of 10 weekdays from February 20 to March 5, 2019.

Interesting. I'm down for any tournament that gets me more Austin.

So, six teams, ten-day format. Are they gonna do it as a round-robin? Chad's link is broken so I don't know if it's mentioned in the article.

EDIT: 6c3 is 20, so it can't be a full round-robin. Hmm.

Assuming a two-leg final I’m curious to see how it works because there’s eight days and everyone can’t play everyone else evenly. My guess is each of two divisions plays four fines then. There’s a leaderboard or wild card. Maybe jai-alai rules where the winnin* team stays on and other teams rotate in.

The show's Twitter has a video teasing "a surprise bigger than [Alex's] beard", so I imagine they're saving the big reveal for next week.

Right away I wonder whether they have to stick with their roles (D/DJ/FJ) throughout or can change it from one game to the next. Does the person who plays in FJ also make the wager, or the captain, or do they decide together?

It seems like for this one time that it would make sense to furnish the categories for the three rounds in advance and plotting from there. Choosing who to play and sit for Double Jeopardy when the most important category of the game is a blind guess comes off as against the spirit of the exercise.

Not a direct mention, just that Monica and Ken were on another show.
