WoF: Buying a car
« on: March 05, 2018, 09:19:53 PM »
During the shopping era, did a contestant ever win enough in round one to buy a car?  I seem to recall seeing someone buy a car in round two once.  Thanks!

I'd barter vowels for the car.  At $250 a pop, it wouldn't take too many U's.

I can't find it, but there's an episode from Christmas 1979, where a female contestant buys a car by solving SLEIGH BELLS RING ARE YOU LISTENIN'. For some reason, I wanna say that was a round one puzzle, but I could be wrong.

I'm gonna say round two for that. I think I remember the $1000 space coming in to play on that one.

One of my favorite WoF moments of the Woolery era! That came to mind too, but I think I remember Chuck stating about the $1,000 space on the wheel and she happened to hit upon it for multiple letters.

I recall a couple of clips that were posted here when that was just a thread and not a section where contestants on the nighttime version piled up a huge bankroll and bought two cars each.

Courtenay O'Connell was on in September 1979 and bought a $6,160 Subaru Brat in round 2 on her first show.  Had a large puzzle and hit multiple $650s and a few $850s.  If there is something I'm missing to post a PNG screenshot I'd share it.

From the full reply page (not the optional quick-reply at the bottom of a page), expand the "Attachments and other options" text and use the "Choose File" button under the "Attach:" heading.

Alternately, if that doesn't work or you don't have that option, upload it to PostImages.org and paste the "Hotlink for forums" code in a reply.

I was this many years old when I learned that there was a car named the BRAT, and that it was in production until 1994. Also $6,200 was quite a lot of car for the late seventies.

One of the earliest Wheel's I remember seeing when I first got GSN was from January '85, featuring a $27,500 Speed-Up win, leading to both the offered cars and a $6 gift certificate.

When was the top value in Round 1 increased above 500? I know it was 500 in the hour-long episodes, and cars were over $3000 at that point.

Top Dollar in R1 was increased to $750 in the fall of 1979.
