Alex Trebek: Debate moderator
« on: February 21, 2018, 05:59:39 PM »
"Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek has done many things in his life. Now he can add "moderate a gubernatorial debate" to his list, as Trebek has been tapped to moderate a Pennsylvania gubernatorial debate this October ...

 https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/21/politics/alex-trebek-pennyslvania-gubernatorial-debate/index.html

Currently, three Republicans are seeking their party's nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Tom Wolf. There's also a Libertarian candidate who may get an invite (and I interviewed that guy 20 years ago when he ran for the same office.)

Presumably ...

-- the "Potent Potables" category will concern state-run liquor stores.
-- Tom Wolf's "fun fact" will involve getting fan mail intended for the white-suited author of a similar name.

Is he going to ask them questions about Canada and bitch when they don't have good enough answers?  ;-)

It's a shame that state governors aren't usually asked about world politics. How is Alex going to find a way to slip into an Eastern European accent?

I may be alone in this, but it sounds like a publicity stunt that will benefit no one.  With rare exceptions, debate moderators are there to keep things moving along, rather than being the star of the show.  If that's the case, there's no need for Trebek to be there; if the plan is to make the debate more along the lines of a Jeopardy! game, then it reduces the debate to a bit of a joke.

Here's hoping a question on the idea of a ferry between Erie and Ontario across the lake comes up.

Bump-- it didn't seem to go too well: https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/10/02/alex-trebek-moderated-a-gubernatorial-debate-in-pennsylvania-it-didnt-go-well/

Too bad Alex didn't moderate the gubernatorial debate from 4 years ago when Lynn Swann was running.  Both hosted "To Tell The Truth".

Hard to believe, but that was 12 years ago.
