GSN Adds More Blackjack to Summer Programming

GSN is adding two more blackjack series to its summer lineup to dovetail with the March 15 premiere of World Series of Blackjack.
Celebrity Blackjack and World Blackjack Tour will continue the tournament blackjack format on GSN.
"We just finished taping the World Series of Blackjack from Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and each game was incredibly suspenseful through the last hand played," said GSN CEO Rich Cronin. "We are thrilled to be adding to GSN's blackjack franchise by creating these new tournaments."
Celebrity Blackjack will feature 25 performers competing for charity in a seven-show format.
World Blackjack Tour will expand to international casinos as well as the U.S.

All I can say is that I think he's jumping the gun here. At least wait and see if the first one works out before adding two more.

Personally, I think these are both pretty low-risk efforts, especially the celebrity version.  For some reason, possibly the fact that I enjoyed Bravo's celebrity poker so much, I think celebrities playing the simpler game of blackjack could be a lot of fun.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

Wow. I just don't see it, myself. I'll give it a try, though, and I would be happy to be wrong, but I don't see where the suspense is.

I assume these are meant ot begin after the WSoBj ends? Given that was only a six-episode event, I assume future shows will follow in the same timeslots. Beats endless reruns, anyway.

I'm pretty sure "he's jumping the gun" in the original post referred to Cronin, not Beverly.

What makes you think GSN won't rerun the original six episodes of "World Series of Blackjack" over and over?  :-|

Travel Channel's blackjack show was certainly interesting enough. Okay, some might think they overdid the human interest angle on how the eventual winner lost his son-in-law on 9/11. But how do you ignore something like that? The producers didn't get too gooey over the tragedy.

There's no question that blackjack can't sustain interest the way no-limit hold 'em can. So an hour show is definitely the way to go, compared to the two-hour poker epics. But the Travel Channel got enough intelligent comments from players on their goofs and gains to keep this viewer watching.

I'm sure that GSN will rerun the original blackjack cycle mercilessly. Welcome to cable economics, folks. But it's nice that they will have some new shows to offer as well.

For some reason I get the feeling that the blackjack show will do the best numbers of any of the non-traditional efforts. Like Matt says, it just seems lower risk, more of a natural fit for GSN's existing audience than Spy TV or the Joe Millionaire docudatery (thank you, Prof).

I'm sure they will be rerun incessantly. What I meant was that reruns of, say, 18 episodes is a lot better than reruns of six.

I would have figured that meant rerunning the episodes three times as long.  :-)

On a more serious note, approximately how many cycles of Wintuition has GSN gone through?

Wintution had 32 or 33 episodes(40 were ordered, but only 32 or 33 were produced IIRC). Wintuition ran on GSN from 12/9/02-1/02/04, and since the 2:30PM rotation ran seven days a week for most of its run, it had to be about 11   cycles.
