I think this is going to be more like Card Sharks 2001 than TJW or TTD '90, I'm afraid.

Maybe we should be thankful that ABC got to Pyramid before Snoop did.

And if Snoop does to "The Joker's Wild" what Ice Cube did to "Hollywood Squares"/"Hip Hop Squares", is that a bad thing?  No one will put a pistol up to your head and force you to watch it.

"Hip Hop Squares" is one of the most-watched shows on VH1, got renewed for a second season, and actually generated some conversation among my high school students a few weeks back after I mentioned the original Squares to several of them for some reason.  Think about it--teenagers talking about a game show in 2017.  Any buzz is good buzz.  (And then I bluntly told the students I haven't seen much of the updated show since if I can name more than one celebrity per show, it's a minor miracle and that highly flawed end game which highly favors the contestant to which I said, "Why not do more game play and then automatically double all money earned for the high scorer at the show's end?")

The Sony Pictures Television half-hour program will be set in a faux casino with giant dice, playing cards, streetwise  questions and problem solving — in addition to the giant slot machine featured in the original.

Dice?  Cards?  Problem solving?

But The Jokers Wild (as we all know) is a game of definitions!!!

That is.........random. Mind you, I'll prolly check it out, but it's definitely not what I expected to wake up to.

Jack Barry could be rolling in his grave any second now at the sight of a Snoop Dogg-hosted Joker's Wild...

/What's next, a High Rollers reboot with Eminem?

Who knows if this will work (though some of the producers are coming from $100K Pyramid- so that could help), but we'll see..

Can't feel too bad about the return of game shows, but Mr. "Get off my lawn" has two concerns. (a) Titles, like words, have meanings. If you're going to do another reboot of Ironside, I'd avoid having the lead walk around on two good legs. "Snoop's Casino" would be more like it. (b) The article I read mentioned they were also shooting for a comedy vibe. Some games are geared for comedy. Today, this seems to be a strong first goal. This is a disturbing trend. Many producers and distributors are looking at classic game formats with an eye toward turning them into alternative sitcoms, forcing laughs instead of them happening naturally. An exciting, tight well-played game like JOKER or PYRAMID can be fun all the time, but it doesn't have to be funny all the time. NFL ratings down? Let's give all the players clown shoes, red sponge noses, and the quarterback can tell jokes between signal calls. That should bring viewers in. A good game is entertaining by itself. I'll wish it well, however. Now if you'll excuse me, Matlock just came on...

Quiet! Don't give 'em any ideas.

As for Snoop hosting Joker, to quote Arte Johnson from Laugh In, "Verrrry interesting."

What helps is, unlike Pyramid or Match, Joker hasn't aired a new episode im almost 30 years and it hasn't aired on GSN (I think) since that Top 50 marathon back in 2006.

It's not a show that's had a heavy presence, so the younger crowd will just see Snoop hosting a game show set in a casino, knowing nothing about Jack Barry. Mike's Hip Hop Squares comparison is perfect. The fanbois may cry foul, but I think it could work, esp. considering Snoop now hosts a cooking show with Martha Stewart.

It might be a good show in its own right; it just sounds like it's even further removed from the source material than Pat Finn's show.

The problem I'm seeing with the comparison is that Squares was pretty much always a comedic Q&A, whereas Joker was pretty much always a straightforward quiz.

Otherwise, The Ol' Guy pretty much summed up my thoughts on this.

Sure, but outside of this forum, the 18-34 demo doesn't care about straightforward Q&A because most of those people don't even know who Jack Barry or Dan Enright are, let alone this show. The draw is not gonna be the questions, it's the giant slot machine. So if it takes a Street Smarts approach instead of Fast Forward and Faces in the News, I don't think it's the end of the world.

I need to re-read the article, but I don't think the folks behind this are going to massacre the TJW name as much as some are fearing. Just one year ago, we thought Match Game '16 would suck.
