GSN Signs a Three-Project Production Deal With Mark Cronin's Mindless Entertainment
Friday January 16, 12:00 pm ET
'Surreal Life' Creators Will Produce 'National Lampoon's Greek Games' And Newly-Announced 'Extreme Dodgeball' in Addition to One Other Program

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- GSN, the Network for Games, has signed a three-project television production deal with Mark Cronin's Mindless Entertainment ("Surreal Life"). Cronin's production company will produce 'NATIONAL LAMPOON'S GREEK GAMES,' a two-hour Greek-flavored athletic spoof featuring fraternities and sororities competing in a variety of absurd sports. Mindless will also produce EXTREME DODGEBALL, a comedy game series, and one additional top-secret program for the all-games network under this trifecta deal. The announcement was made today by GSN President and CEO Rich Cronin, who is no relation to Mark, but always listens to anyone named Cronin.

"We had a great experience working with Mark Cronin and his team on WHO WANTS TO BE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA? THE DEBATING GAME and on the series CRAM. They are some of the most creative thinkers in the industry today," said Rich Cronin. "When we came up with GREEK GAMES and EXTREME DODGEBALL, I thought Mindless would be the perfect production company to capture the spirit and comedy of these programs."

"Rich Cronin is one of the most creative network presidents I've ever worked with and I truly enjoy his collaborative process. This triple project deal is a great way to expand and solidify our already strong relationship. Mindless is proud to be a big part of GSN's relaunch and future growth," stated Mark Cronin.

EXTREME DODGEBALL will provide an entertaining "grown-up slant" on the gym-class favorite. Dodgeball cannons, trick balls and shifting surfaces will combine to challenge teams including the Sumo All-Stars (all sumo wrestlers); Just Jockeys (horse racing athletes); The Screaming Mimes (all mimes, all the time); The Hip-Hop Army (all rappers) and other teams from more traditional careers. Each team will wear their typical attire as they develop and execute extreme strategies to annihilate their opponents. Celebrity coaches will even help lead their players to victory.

NATIONAL LAMPOON'S GREEK GAMES culminates in July with a two-hour special featuring fraternities and sororities battling it out for the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals, plus delicious baklava. The special will also feature a variety of up-close-and-personal glimpses of the "Greek" athletes training for their events. The show may include such competitions as the Pita Bread Discus Toss and Greek Olive Oil Wrestling, among other strange events.

In addition to this deal, Mindless Entertainment has several network prime time series in development and/or production including the hit "Surreal Life 2." Mark Cronin's other projects in development include "Life Is Too Short," an NBC half-hour reality comedy pilot starring two-foot-eight actor Verne Troyer and his surrogate family, and the IFC eight-part series "Ultimate Film Fanatic," a competition show in search of the nation's biggest film buff.

GSN, the Network for CRAP, is the only U.S. television network dedicated to the crappiest originals ever and interactive casino and video game playing.  For all of the whining and bitching at the end of the above post, I'm sorry, but to me this sounds entertaining as hell. I would watch this with no qualms. How do you take DODGEBALL seriously? :)

I did some research on this Mark Cronin guy, because his name sounded familiar. His first two shows? "Singled Out" and "Big Deal" in the mid 90s. Singled Out I really don't care about, because it was dating crap like a bunch of stuff today [but honestly, it really wasn't that bad compared to some of today's] But if "spirit" and "comedy" was supposed to be the sick stunts they did on Big Deal, I'll GLADLY pass on it.

Creative thinkers? Their one series that I subjected myself to, Cram [I wouldn't watch WWTBGOC] was a conglomeration of Talkabout, Shop til you Drop, and The Chair. Hardly that creative, IMO.

Oh my goodness. Ignoring the line "grown-up slant," am I the only one who sees a slight resemblence between this and the Rayburn/Farago Break the Bank?

grr.

Shows like the unintelligent ones earlier in the thread are aired on so many other networks. It's veiwers like you who aid in the downfall of a great concept for a channel.

Enjoy the new network.

Chris, I agree. Dodgeball sounds kinda fun-and being a guy that watches MXC, I guess I'm part of the target ingrediant.

The rest though, I'll pass on.

Just because someone likes a non-traditional game show doesn't make them wrong. Those who do didn't lead to the downfall of the "old GSN". Wake up. GSN wasn't as successful as it was as a strict game show channel. Accept it and move on.

Hmm... Dodgeball of the extreme variety...

Actually, this sounds like the only non-game show item I would watch on The Game Show Network.  Nothing like reliving all those bad experiences of 4th grade gym.

I'll still take a nap during the other primetime stuff, though...

I never said he was "wrong" for liking those shows. I think I do owe an apology however, for all those who do like reality shows. They're every where, so why should we add them to another network?
You say GSN wasn't successful as an all-game-show network, but can you be positive it will improve in ratings with reality shows added?
Chances are, no other networks will air classic game shows. Oh, well.

If GSN wants to televise the above offerings along with Celebrity Marshmallow Toasting, they're going to do it and I'll live with it. I won't watch, but I don't live in a Nielsen household so I doubt they give a tinker's whizz.

I'm going to have to say yes.  I can't possibly imagine where you see a connection between Break The Bank and this description of Extreme Dodgeball.

Actually, i do plan on liking it.  and anyway, game show for a great concept for a channel?  I like game shows, and i find a channel devoted to game shows to be a bit obscure and there could have been better things Sony could have done with the money.  I am going to REALLY enjoy the new channel.  My 2 favorite game shows, RR and FoF are back in primetime.  The Mole, the only reality show i will watch, is on.  This show looks half way entertaining.  Compain and moan all you want, i got a feeling this network is going to do better.  Game shows attract SOME fans, but GAMES in general attract a wider range.  This is a network looking to make money, not a toy that can be altered for the likings of everyone just so Cronin can get a pat on the back.  I have not agreed with everything he has done.  I didnt like GSN Video Games, and i am a huge gamer.  Do you not think i liked it when it was just RR, FoF, W!, Lingo, and the classics?  that was the best time for me, but that time is over.  The network was failing.  Reality shows and stuff like this is making a huge part of ratings, and GSN is just trying to be successful, and who can blame them.  Of course, all the people with their heads stuck up their asses will say then can, but i fully understand what Cronin is trying to do: make GSN into a network name.

ROFLMAO!

And let me guess... there will be some bad translation, random names for contestants, and a couple of smart aleck announcers who bop each other with paper fans to go with this, right?

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course... =D

eh extreme dodgeball could be worse, still dreading greek games.

on the topic of GSNs new focus...if it wasnt so rerun abused by TNN and before that USA id say picking up AG would be a good fit for GSN. does spike still have the rights?
