Sure it does: without the chrome, it\'s \"Generic Quiz Show\", at least according to you. MDP didn\'t need any chrome (other than the playing area disk rising for the money rounds). The one thing that would be difficult to carry out on a digital clock as opposed to a readout was that each time a contestant passed the belt o\' loot would move a little faster.

Why is it that a game show needs a hook, an edge or chrome at all? For years and years that wasn\'t the case, and Jeopardy is still compelling fifty years later.

The \"hook\", as you call it, was such a ridiculous gimmick that the show basically embarrassed itself off the air. It was on for five episodes, is long gone and has been long forgotten by all but a handful of die-hard game show fans. The same thing happened with Show Me the Money.

If all you have is question-answer-question-answer, yes, it\'s a generic quiz. Throw in a slot machine or a tic-tac-toe board and you at least have a useful device which isn\'t a ridiculous gimmick.

This, more or less. There are lots of ways to wrap chrome around that basic game format that don\'t make it all about the chrome. Hell, look at The Chase; talk about doing more with less.
