My understanding is that OSCAR (which was disallowed) is a breed of fish, making the word legal to use.  Am I off my rocker here?

I went to the dictionary website Onelook.com and just about every entry lists "Oscar" as the movie award.  However, Wikipedia does list "Oscar" as a fish.  The entry is here.  Take a look.

While were on the topic, would proper words be described as Illegal words, say MAINE?

Yes, proper words are illegal, hence the disallowance of Oscar tonight.

The Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary doesn't list "oscar" as a legal word, however The Official Countdown Dictionary does, so I can definitely see that ruling going either way.
