$25000 Pyramid Win
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:14:04 AM »
I've seen the video of Dick taking his contestant to the top for $25K on Cullen's version but did Cullen ever take a contestant up to $25K on Clark's version?
<p>I share a birthday with Jack Barry.

It wasn't for $25K, but Cullen took his partner to the top of the pyramid on the finale of Clark's $20K.

That's actually a more interesting question than I originally thought, since Bill only did five weeks of $25,000 Pyramid shows.  I'd like to think that he must have done it at least once in twenty-five shows, but I don't have any proof that he did.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

The only way one will ever find out if Bill Cullen had any $25K wins on The New $25,000 Pyramid, is when and if his first appearance on that version of the show airs. But because it has never been shown since its original airing on CBS, that question remains unknown to this day.

Would a $25K win on the $100K Pyramid count for the sake of this discussion? That would at least give him more chances.

Really? I could have sworn I've seen him on the show at least once in a while...

Dick Clark assisted both of his contestant partners to $25K wins in his two appearances on the Cullen show.  Clark's shows were taped back to back, making him the first and only celebrity to clear the big board four times in a row.

Were those his only two shows of Cullen Pyramid? If so, doesn't that make him the only undefeated celeb?

Not quite, by definition.  Clark won both front and end games four times in a row.  Jack Carter won every front game played against Shelley Winters during a week of $10KP in the summer of 1973.  On the Tuesday show, Carter became the second celebrity to clear the big board twice in one show.  The "Things That Shine" clip floating around was the first win that episode.  On the Thursday show, Winters admitted how poorly she was doing.  She suggested that Andrew, the eight year old son of a friend of hers should come up from the studio audience to take her place.

To think it was 37 years ago.  I wonder whatever became of that kid.

In any event, he lost his undefeated status, big time, in 2002, when he won only two of six games. However, he had a win and a single-category miss. That brings his lifetime record to 35 categories earned out of 36 played (97.2%). I bet not many celebs have that good a record! I'll even go out on a limb and say that he's the only player who's perfect in 2+ appearances receiving the clues.

(Note: This only includes U.S. appearances. I'm told he also appeared on the Australian version and had some difficulty.)
