Your Influences

If given a chance to host is there a personality you would look to for inspiration? I would study the charm and smoothness of Peter Marshall or Dick Clark.

(And as said on another thread I don't think I have what it takes to do it).

Bill Cullen or Gene Rayburn, easily IMO the most entertaining hosts game shows have ever seen.

Jim Perry. He could make something like Card Sharks into a dramatic and exciting show.

I think, even without Jim Perry, it was still a dramatic and exciting show because the game itself was dramatic and exciting.

True, but put Bob Eubanks or Pat Bullard on the show and that excitement is all gone.

They won't hit you, because I'm going to say something even more risible:

Sajak for his ability to be a little sarcastic in the face of excruciating contestants ... and Bob Barker (before the decline) for his ability to be pleasant in the face of excruciating contestants.

Overall, though, I have to echo Dick Clark as having, IMO, the best overall "hosting ethic".

Bill Cullen for dealing with civilians, Gene Rayburn for dealing with celebrities. But Clark did one thing on LA Pyramid that I liked: He was honest about bad situations. "Play this turn for practice," when down by six waiting for your third turn, or "That's not gonna hold up," when the first WC only results in $150.

Reminds me of one time when one team was down by several, made a 7/7 to pull ahead by two or so, and the other team completely cluster-effed. Dick was "at a loss for words," as he put it.

I'm about to be stoned by the masses, but here goes...

The host of the "Whammy" revival (forgot his name, and Mark Walberg) are faces that immediately spring to mind because they have great personality.  After reading some replies, I also agree with Sajak and Clark.

I'd really look to people who can make any kind of game fun and engaging.  I mean they are games right?  So why not get the most enjoyment out of them as possible.

As for Cullen...have to say the only Cullen I can think of is Peter.  XD This other was simply before my time. (Yay research!)
