Your Dream Job In Game Shows

No, I don't have any game show jobs to offer, sorry :-)

If you could have any job in game shows from any era, what would it be? By "any era" I mean from the late '40s all the way up to today. If you could to be the person who operated the old mechanical Concentration board, or the emcee of Deal or No Deal, or a writer on Jeopardy!, or a panelist on What's My Line?, what would you want to do?

I'd say a producer in the 1980s, an Anne-Marie Schmidt or Howard Felsher.

Games were still a mix of traditional mechanical games (i.e. Pyramids trilons) and modern technology (the rear-projection/monitors of PYL and TJW/TTD). Some moved a little TOO forward (any show where the gameboard was "superimposed" in place of a huge rear projection monitor--i.e. Blockbusters and High Rollers 87) I'd love to produce in an era where the producers still cared about game mechanics and structure, and didn't rush to put together three or four (flawed) rounds, and call it a day. The revivals were competently done and faithful to previous efforts (i.e. Pyramid, Card Sharks, $ale), but offered visual updates to where it didn't look like a complete clusterfrick.

Anything on Pyramid that isn't host or announcer.  I prefer behind-the-scenes work.

I'd go with question writer in general. I wouldn't care where it was...except perhaps for "Temptation."

My dream job would be hosting TTTT in the '70s.  Hangin' with Kitty, Peggy and Bill in NYC every week, meeting facinating people, those great sets and outstanding music package and working for G-T.  I'd settle for being a sub host when Garry wanted to go on vacation.

Announcer.  Era doesn't matter.  I used to work in Radio and loved it and listening to the greats (Mr. Olson, Mr. Wood, Mr. Pardo, et al.) has been one of my favorite parts of watching game shows.  I often play "announcer" in my own car during my long commute home (I live 42 miles from work).  It's a great job and I would give my right arm to do it!

The latter, quite specifically, even if you hadn't offered it up as an example.  Especially knowing that in that role, I'd have the chance to poke around the other G-T shows every once in a while.

Outlandish fantasy: hosting TPiR, Sale of the Century, Tic Tac Dough or Joker's Wild.

Somewhat realistic fantasy: any behind the scenes job on any of the aforementioned...

Reality: I'd settle for being a page or a janitor at Television City.

Developing a game show in the early sixties. The emphasis then was on the challenge of the game and not winning mind-boggling amounts of money.

Announcing or hosting Match Game, What's My Line?, or Concentration.  I learned a lot of the interviewing skills that I've ended up using in my 35-year radio and TV career, by watching and listening to Johnny O, Gene, John, and Hugh.

Would definitely have loved to get my hands on the Concentration board and/or its controller ...

Helping DdB come up with MG questions.

1) Directing, without a doubt. And that's in the Paul Alter/Marc Breslow/Bruce Burmester sense of the term, not the R. Brian DiPirro one.

2) Studio crew, either operating camera, graphics, or technical direction.

in order of preference:
1. writer, P+/SP
2. judge, Pyramid or Jeopardy!
3. host, WML or any of its clones
4. writer, Family Feud (or selecting the questions for each day's show)
