#4? Number four? He sold The New Chain Reaction! Perhaps you never saw him host those Variety Club telethons in Cleveland.

I couldn't tell those two apart in the dark. Although I'd certainly like to try.

Dang it--there's another one I forgot.

Good thing I haven't submitted my list.

What is a stumbling block for me is the place in history of hosts who sorta did game shows as a "side job."  People like Hugh Downs, Steve Allen and John Daly with much longevity with game shows, but even more doing other things.
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

Not to mention Johnny Carson.

And frankly, I'm not sure what to do there.  I only saw WHO DO YOU TRUST? in small clips (and I don't think I ever saw EARN YOUR VACATION), but you can't deny Carson's place in television history.  Besides, his notoriety on WDYT probably helped earn him the TONIGHT gig.

As of now, Johnny's on my list, but more for his name than anything else.  If that's not the proper way to approach it, Matt, please let me know and I'll adjust accordingly.

/yes, I realize I'm taking this way more seriously than I should, but I still don't want to look like a total idiot
//prolly too late for that, but still. . .

And I'm tending to leave them out, for that reason. My main interest is to list people who have been game-show hosts as a primary career, not as a one-off or secondary job. YMMV, of course, but that's what I want to focus my list around.

And I'm also tending towards the generational, since those are the folks whose body of work I am most familiar with. I can't really rank Hugh Downs because I've never seen him working as a host outside of some very scant clips of Concentration.

My view was completely opposite of this.  I gave more kudos to people like John Daly...who were successful in other duties, but equally successful in hosting a game show.

I think that takes a special kind of person.

To me, someone like Downs or Daly who helmed a long-running game show even if it wasn't his primary job deserves to be on the list.  I would say the same for Dick Clark even though at least as many people would associate him with American Bandstand and New Year's Rockin' Eve as Pyramid.

Carson is a tougher call.  Not having seen Who Do You Trust?, I can't judge his game show hosting abilities.  Do I put him on the list simply because he's Johnny Carson, who happens to have hosted a game show that undoubtedly helped him achieve greater fame elsewhere?  I don't know.  I think that if could come up with 20 people who are deserving of being on the list solely on the strength of their game show hosting abilities, I'd probably leave him off.  (I haven't started making my list yet, so I can't say whether Johnny will eventually make the cut or not.)
