GSN Schedule Notes for early October
« on: September 10, 2006, 12:55:51 AM »
In digging through Zap2it, (yes I figured out how to make it go more than 2 weeks in advance) I did find a couple things.

That's the Question debuts on October 2 at 6pm eastern replacing Hollywood Squares which will be back to weekends only.

As we all know, What's My Line returns to late Sunday/early Monday at 3am eastern.  The 3:30 slot will remain a rotating "Game of the Week" sort of thing.  On the night of October 1 we'll see an episode of Double Dare with Alex Trebek, then on the night of the 8th the only surviving episode of Number Please.

Damn! They last time they aired this was what...December 31, 1999?

Did it ever get a regular airing?

I can almost forgive GSN for their horrid 50 Shows We Have in Our Library special.
Almost.

First question:  It was a Game of the Week.  I don't recall if it aired as a GotW in 1999 or 2000.  If it was in '99, then you're correct about the last time DD saw the light of day was in the Y2Play marathon.

Second question:  Yes, it aired in the middle of the night on weekends in 1997.

Yes, indeed. Tonight's the night (tomorrow's the morning).
And I'll be tickled as a tomato with whatever episode they give us.

Me too, my appetite only whetted by that 1975 finale posted on "Page O'Clips."  If it's an orange set ep it'll be even better but I'd love to see whatever they show.

BTW am I the only one who thought the lightning round on that '75 finale was especially butt-clinchingly suspenseful, with the wrong word being guessed and everything?

No, just like I can't be the only person who noticed (back in 1975, and every time I've watched it since) that the clock mysteriously slows (stops?) near the end.

I can top that: I wish there was a tape to back this up or not, but I can just about swear I once saw the countdown clock on the bonus round of Baffle run forward instead of backwards.  The contestant won, of course.

Now, are you talking aside from the flub they made when they mistakenly awarded the win? Maybe they paused the clock to make up for that?

I don't have it in front of me, but my memory is that "they" didn't mistakenly award the win.  The celebrity mistakenly thought he had won (when he read 'single' instead of 'shingle'), and Allen quickly got him to look at the word again.  Were they fudging the clock because of that?  Were they fudging the clock because they wanted to go out with a win?  Who knows? But they did fudge the clock.

Now I wish I could see the clip again, because IIRC they cued the lights and such as well, which to me leaves at least some culpability on the production.

Your point is well-taken, though.

I think whomever was controlling the clock thought that the celeb had won as well and he had stopped the clock. It may have took him a couple of extra seconds to realize what had happened to reset the clock. It could also have something to do with the fact that they wanted to go out with a win, as you could hear Allen try to say "Give 'em five more seconds" when the buzzer went off and the contestant said "shingle." It was probably a case of all of the above.

It's back up. Notice that right before the contestant pulled out the word shingle, the clock froze at :01. You could even here the "tick" signifying that a second had elapsed, but the clock was still at :01.

As for the return of the Game of the Week, at least GSN appears to be attempting to make amends with the classics fans.
I wonder if these rare series will only come from the G-T library....
