Title: Worst prizes ever...
Post by: Dbacksfan12 on January 24, 2006, 07:11:32 AM
We've done threads on dream prizes, props, etc.  However, to my recollection, we have not done a list of prizes that you personally wouldn't want.

So, what prize would you be absolutely mortified to win?  Please limit your selections to around 4 (lest someone become Zach II and give a complete list of prizes, and what shows they were on).

I cringe whenever TPiR offers a motorhome, a boat, or a spa as a prize. Aside from the fact that I'd have no use for any of those prizes, I live in a townhouse.....where would I store them?

One of those spa/jacuzzis that TPiR gives away. I also live in a townhouse.

"When I was little, if we wanted a Jacuzzi, we had to fart in the tub!"
-Eddie Murphy, "Trading Places" (paraphrased)

I have 3 more...I'll be back :-P

I have the same problem. Add to that a fireplace, gazebo & popcorn machine.

I would have to say the infamous GEM car...essentially a glorified golf cart!  I always laughed when people would be shouting for the GEM car on Whammy! during its first season...:)  And I completely agree with the spa and gazebo people as well; I live in an apartment, so I would have absolutely no place to store it!

The other one (one they seem to like to give away in Most Expensive on TPIR) is that retro gas pump replica of some sort.  What in the world would you do with that?  Unless it actually does pump gas, I see no need for it...:)

The Price is Right presents..."The Table of Gold"/"The Crystal Table"!

Horrible--what middle-American contestant has a use for $3,500 (1975 dollars) worth of gold/crystal dinnerware, flatware and stemware?

I got two...

1) If you go with the spa and jacuzzi as baddies, I say the swimming pools have gotta be up there as well. If you don't live in a house with a backyard, where might you put it- on the roof? (scary thought just now- a game of Most Expensive with all three being offered as prizes...jibblies.)

2) If I was playing any of the car games with the Aveo as a prize, I'd wanna throw it back. Now, I'm not knocking the people who like it or have it, but those things are ugly.

I read somewhere that the prize contestants refuse most often is trips.  Back when J! fell into the rut of having a vacation for second place and something easily sellable for third, my betting strategy for third place in a situation where 1st - 2nd > 3rd was to bet everything and take a dive.

The replica gas pump would be most logical to fall under the "game room/furniture" category.  What would I do with a replica gas pump?  If I didn't have room in the house, my second choice would be to put it outside by the garage and route my garden hose through it.  Imagine passers-by doing double-takes when they *think* they see somebody watering their lawn with 93 octane.

Anyhoo, back to topic.  For TPIR prizes -- Musical instruments: Banjos, Drum sets (exception: guitars), the tennis ball serving machines, the outdoor greenhouses and, back in the days when 8-track tapes there hip, the "pop-up" stereo consoles (similar to the defective "pop-up" bar that is always seen on the TPIR Blooper reels).

As far as worst prizes go, I'll start cheap & work my way up:

A $583 floor screen-Good grief!  What would I want that for outside of a decorative touch?

A $599 cat climbing tree-I don't have a cat so that takes care of that.

A $1,560 gallery clock-Eeek!  I've got enough clocks, watches & other things that tell time for me.  I don't need that.  No way!

Finally, any GEM car on a game show.  Unless I play golf(wich I don't), I'll pass on thatr.

No, but M&Ms can be bought at certain places by color. For example, when I went to 30 Rock, there was an M&M display in the NBC Studio Store. Not only do they sell the normal colors separately (you have to bag your own), but they also have colors that aren't in the normal array, like gray and purple.

ObGameShows: "Let's Bowl" used to have really bad prizes, but that was part of the charm, I guess. For example, in their local Minneapolis TV days, they often gave away gift certificates to Old Country Buffet and merchandise from a defunct radio station as prizes.

I just watched a few of those local ones for the first time. Funny stuff. Slow and clunky and not as polished as the Comedy Central version (which was sadly underrated and underwatched), but the building block were still there.

"Dried strips of animal flesh? That's for me!"

Esoteric Eric... thanks to the Page O'Clips, I saw a fairly bad prize on Jimmy's clip of Blank Check(EDIT: now replaced on his website); a trip to Vegas (train from LA and back, two-night stay), valued at $160 (yikes)

Well, I'd take that prize, especially if I could go back in time to do it, since the Vegas-to-Barstow portion of the train trip is no longer part of the Amtrak system and therefore now counts as "rare mileage" for railfans.

The L.A.-to-Vegas fare was fairly cheap (you gotta give people some reason to take a six-and-a-half-hour train ride instead of a four-hour drive or a 45-minute flight), but I'm betting the 2-night stay was not in one of Vegas's finer hotels.

Called thus because of its clientele--for those who couldn't wait to get to the Mustang Ranch.  :)

Let's see... prizes I would be mortified to win... here's my list:
1.  A Mongolian lamb throw rug worth $1500
2.  A set of bone china worth $640
3.  A Navajo etching worth $269

Oh wait...

I'm suprised that the PYL and Whammy! fans didn't mention the two cheapest prizes on the show:
-$189 Jog 'N Tramp
-$120 Humidor

As for the non-PYL and W! prizes:

-High Rollers: African Mask
-High Rollers: Musical Dolls

I consider it a sign of great hope that most of them didn't remember.

...although that Jog 'N Tramp sounds like it might go well with that hotel in Vegas. <ducks>

Well, that explains why it was so cheap...
