Title: GSN: Hypocrites?
Post by: rebelwrest on October 16, 2005, 06:37:11 PM
At this point, I think we all know that GSN now refuses to air the Match Game episode in which in response to the question "The commisioner said, 'I think Batman and Robin are BLANK,'" the contestant and two panelists said QUEER.  On today's Match Game 74, the question involved Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  The contestant and a panelist said GAY.

Now, I think that is synonymous (the kind of synonymous that gets you buzzed in the winner's circle).  If GSN is allowed to air that, they should allow the queer episode to air.

Except it isn't really, since one is conidered by many to be a somewhat more derogatory term than the other.

I doubt "queer" (in 2005, at least) was considered nearly as derogatory as "fairies".

Considering there's two popular TV shows with the word "Queer" in their titles, I'd agree.

Yeah, but it's very much one of those deals where the members of the group can use the term to refer to themselves, but the second a straight guy calls someone "queer", someone, somewhere, is gonna pitch a complete fit. Kinda like the "N" word.

In the early run of MG, I've seen a couple of answers being edited out entirely, only because the answer they gave was unacceptable to air. It doesn't affect the gameplay, but it is noticable when they skip a panelist that was supposed to play the question. Once, CNR gave an answer that was unacceptable for broadcast, but it was also an answer that matched. His answer was edited out and Brett, who was seated at the lower tier at the time, asked Gene what Charles had said. Gene mentioned that Charles said the correct answer, but no mention was made that it was unacceptable for broadcast. Unairable answers were a rarity for MG 7z, but in the later run, they'd simply put in an "oops" graphic over the panelist's answer.

Not surprisingly, the responses that referred to gay people pretty much stopped once CNR became a regular.

I know you're not insinuating that CNR is gay.  How dare you!

I always thought that he and Brett were flirting with each other.

I always knew CNR wore a toupee and all, but up until this year, I never knew he was gay.

Believe it or not, it's actually TRUE!

Does one have anything to do with the other?   Just checking.

Well, sort of.  In Charles' case, both might not be obvious at first glance... That said, both give themselves away after about ten minutes.
