Tomorrow GSN will show(for the third time) the 3000th episode. They call it the 3000th episode, although my math puts it at episode 2935(the first two seasons had 195 shows, and the next 11 seasons had 230 shows, and the episode airing tomorrow was show number 15 of that season).

I finally remembered to check our archives at work...that really was Episode Number 3000. (It was a different situation with what was referred to on-air as "episode 4000." It wasn't the actual Number 4000.)

I am curious as to how you got that as the real 3000th episode. Not that I am doubting you, but by Zach's calculations # 2935 seems right. Of course that could be wrong, but I don't think it is.
EDIT: It looks like you are right about this. I multiplied 230 times 7, the number of seasons done beginning with 14, and got 1610. I then subtracted that from 4595, the total at the end of last season, and got 2985. Meaning that, the 3000th episode was indeed the 3000th episode. I apologize. I wonder though, how is it possible that this could be? Zach's calculations seemed right to me, before I took a different approach. Did they do more then 230 shows a year at some point for a while?

Oh. So since Episode 4000 was celebrated when they hadn't hit #4000 yet after all, what say we avoid the rush by celebrating the 5000th show now?

IIRC they did 195 shows for the first two seasons, and 230 shows a season from season three-on.

I think the J! staff forgot there were 195 shows in the first two seasons rather than 230.

But when they first started to produce 230 shows per season, then what color were the J! Letters on the set back then?

The letters were actually in 1.5 million colors of light! It was truly ahead of its time. Unfortunately, it took such a toll on the budget, they had to make several changes, such as replacing the Daily Double with 'Can I Borrow a Quarter?'. That and the only colors that mattered in the '80s were the bright ones, and, although J! could afford 1.5 million colors, only 3 of them were bright, and the many colors, as well with the other changes, were nixed after the first three episodes.

I went into the archive of closed-captioning files at my office, took a quick look at the text of the show that had the filename JEOP3000, and saw the caption of Johnny Gilbert calling it the 3000th show. That was good enough for me.
I can't imagine them having done anything with the episode numbers other than go consecutively since the beginning...but perhaps they continued the consecutive numbering for the first-season repeats in the summer of 1985, thus giving those reruns new numbers. That would have accounted for the difference, right?
