Title: Game show hosts you've met
Post by: aaron sica on April 20, 2023, 09:20:50 AM
Which game show hosts have you met? Being on a show doesn't count as we have a lot of contestants in here! At a show, or in public, or conventions, etc..

Me:
John O'Hurley at a book signing, Borders, 2006
Richard Karn at at a Harrisburg Senators game, 2017
Michael Strahan at a Pyramid taping, 2016
Bob Eubanks at a convention, 2022
Marc Summers at a seminar talking about his documentary, 2017
Todd Netwon at a Get Schooled Event, 2002

Cool topic!

Me:
Todd Newton at a GSN (well, Game Show Network at the time) Get Schooled tour in 2002.
Marc Summers at a couple Food Network and Double Dare events.
Alec Baldwin at several Match Game tapings (I explain below why I mention this)
Michael Strahan with you, Aaron in 2017
Donny Osmond in Washington DC at a Pyramid event
Mark L. Walberg
Vicki Lawrence

While I was just in the audience at Match Game with Alec I always ended up heckling him from the audience during taping shut downs when he'd interact with the audience.  It started out friendly until he recognized me from earlier tapings in the day and started making fun of me lightly and I'd hand it back to him.  It got to the point we yelled at each other - but again this was all tongue-in-cheek.  It turns out at the taping where we yelled I was sitting in front of a friend of his and Alec came up to greet them at the end of the taping.  Alec firmly put his hand on my shoulder and said "Thanks for being a good sport and playing along there".  He's not exactly Mr. Warmth but I still insist he's not as bad as others make him out to be.

Todd Newton was as friendly as could be and spoke with me at length about Peter Tomarken and a lot about taping Whammy and Hollywood Showdown.  His autobiography seems rather cocky to how he was in person, to be honest.

Marc Summers couldn't have been a nicer guy with me and took an excessive amount of time at a Food Network event when I told him about how my Dad built me a podium "just like Marcs!" when I was growing up because I always wanted to be a gameshow host.  When my dad passed in the photo collage at the funeral home we had a picture of me standing behind the podium next to the TV with Double Dare on.  Marc seemed so touched and after I told him that he talked for a very long while with me.

Best general celebrity interaction?  Both Darrel Hammond and Jane Krakowski after a Match Game taping.

I met Peter Sagal and got his autograph at a taping of Wait Wait in 2013.

A couple weeks ago when I was in NYC on vacation, I saw The Tonight Show and got to ask Jimmy Fallon a question during one of the breaks. I asked him "Besides That's My Jam, if you could have the opportunity to host any other game show which would you choose?" He said he wasn't sure and that he always saw himself as more of a player than a host.

ETA: Not a "meeting" per se but I did see Steve Harvey's talk show in 2015 when he was doing it in Chicago. Everyone in the audience got a free pair of Nike sunglasses.

The Game Show Congresses of the latter 2000s and its related events were a great place to meet hosts.  My list from just those events include Tom Kennedy, Jack Narz, Bil Dwyer, Frank Nicotero, Todd Newton, Wink Martindale, Johnny Gilbert, Guillermo Huesca, Peter Marshall, Monty Hall, and likely others not coming to mind.  Others that were there that I did not meet include Elaine Boosler and Henry Polic II.

Elsewhere...
Vicki Lawrence, at a comic con last December
George Gray, at a Price taping in 2015
John O'Hurley, at the same book signing as Aaron
Mike Greenberg, at a book signing ~2010
Drew Carey, after a parade in 1996
J. Keith van Stratten, in 2019 at, of all things, a Cleveland Indians game.  He posted on FB he was at the game.  I told him I was at that game too.  So I schlepped my way from the bleachers to the nosebleeds and was with J. Keith's pals for 3 innings.

Close but no cigar:  Dick Clark, in 1999.  I was about 5 feet from him, but he was in a rush to get to LA--the official announcement for Greed was that day.

Indirectly: Guy Fieri when he visited our local diner. Got a picture with him a few months before “Minute to Win It” premiered.

Directly: J. Keith van Straaten at Trivia Nationals in 2019. There might be a group picture somewhere of us all playing “Match Game” for charity.

Okay, my turn...

Randy West- Twice... once around 2001, at the now former NBC Studios in Burbank, where Chris Jaunsen and I saw the Louie Anderson Feud set, the O'Hurley TTTT set, both in the same studio, and the Supermarket Sweep set in studio 9 I think, as well as The Weakest Link in Studio 1. He was a great tour guide. The second time was a year later, in 2003, on my birthday, where my brother, his wife and I all saw a taping of TPIR and he was announcing.

Bob Barker- In 2009 in NY for a book signing. He was uncharacteristically quiet and barely spoke, likely because there were many in line and he had to sign several books before flying back to CA.

Marc Summers- In 2017, twice. He was at a local ice cream place in Baltimore to meet and greet fans, where I shot a brief video with him, then the very next day, I got a picture with him after a showing of his documentary, with Pat Sajak interviewing him. Didn't get to meet Pat as he left before the movie ended.

Roger Dobkowitz and Rich Fields- 2007 at Bob's last show.

Stu Kerr- local Baltimore personality. He wasn't exactly a game show host, but had a call in show where he tried to call local people to give away prizes, it was called Dialing for Dollars. Stu was best known for having a number of children's shows. One show did have a series of games, but all played for fun, called Pop's Place. My brother interviewed him for a school project. Lots of great stories. One was on his shows, he would announce children's birthdays, then instruct that child that there was a special present hiding for him. In reality, the kid's Mom or Dad sent Stu a letter telling him where their child's present would be hiding. He got one letter from a mother whose daughter he surprised by telling her to look behind the blue couch for a surprise gift. She realized, at that point, that Stu could see her! From that point on, she never wore her pajamas in front of the TV set again!

I met Bob Barker when he came to Drury to donate a bunch of his Emmys and a million dollars. I teach one of his program’s classes, so I got to have a little bit of one on one time with him before the presentation.

Hard to believe he is going to be 100 this year.

I got to meet and introduce David Ruprecht for a bunch of kids at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and helped him run a little trivia show - just the nicest man possible. Tom Kennedy, Betty White, and others at the final Game Show Congress.
Pat Finn was at the San Diego County Fair hosting Family Feud Live! several years back, and I got to talk to him about The Joker's Wild. Met and chatted with Chris Harrison after a Millionaire taping (just after they rebooted the classic format), and he seemed really informed about the show's history - for sure.

Met Todd Newton after a Price Live show back in '13. I had a T-shirt made for the occasion and he autographed it for me.

Also met Mark L. Walberg after seeing him at Wheel of Fortune Live last fall. Both were super chill and seemed like they'd be fun to swap stories with over a few beers.

Drew Carey - First encounter: He auditioned to do standup at a Cleveland comedy club 1981. Second encounter: Taping of NPR's "Go Fact Yourself."

J. Keith Van Stratton - A few years ago, at a party held by a certain game show author. Then again at the "Go Fact Yourself" taping.

Tom Kennedy - At a meeting of the Game Show Congress. I held the door open for him but he turned away in anger.

Wink Martindale - I demonstrated a couple of game show formats I developed and worked with him for a year before he fired me.

Pat Sajak - He was keeping company with a reporter who worked at KABC where I was a videotape editor. She brought him by to exchange pleasantries.

Not too many—aside from Our MattO, met both Phil Moore and J. Keith at Throwdown ‘19 in Glendale, and though she’s certainly know more as an antagonist Anne Hegerty at TCONA 2016. About the only other outreach was a tweet to Hunter March about hosting running in the family blood and he either liked or replied which was all I could ask for.

Met and talked to:

- Todd Newton (a couple of times after TPIR Live! events, he was very nice)

- Frank Nicotero (very brief conversation after a taping day of Millionaire in Las Vegas)

- I think I said "hi" to Donny Osmond as he walked passed us backstage at a Donnymid mall event, but if I did we didn't actually have any real conversation beyond that.

Game show host-adjacent conversations with:

- Charlie O'Donnell (during some down time on a Wheel taping in Vegas)

- Randy West (a couple of occasions)

Seen in person but didn't get to talk to: Regis, Chris Harrison*, Monty Hall**, Mark L. Walberg, Howie Mandel, Pat & Vanna.

*I did talk to Harrison as a contestant on the long-forgotten GSN original Mall Masters at Mall of America, but per the OP that doesn't count for this thread. I included him in the list though since I also attended a Millionaire taping where he was the host.

** I certainly tried to meet Monty after he hosted a Let's Make a Deal event at the local casino many years ago. When the show was over I went up to the stage as he was starting to walk away in the hopes of being able to say hi. Despite the fact that I could still see him at the edge of the stage, I was told that, "Mr. Hall has already left.", and that was that.

Ray was cool, he was doing an appearance at The Lion Stoe in Toledo.. I have a signed 8x10 glossy. This was in 1991. They did a Family Feud stage show at the store. Just there long enough to shake his hand and get the picture.

I thought about this for a couple of days. We're going back 30 years and more. But here are the hosts I met.

Bill Cullen - I met my username on several occasions. But I had quality time with him in the parking lot after a Love Experts taping. We talked for a few minutes, he actually remembered me from New York. He made the move to L.A. because "that's where the jobs were." He liked the weather and didn't miss the cold winters.

Alex Trebek - I met him at a Jeopardy tryout around 1991. After the test, the two ladies went over when to expect to hear, etc. Then they said "And here is the host of our show" and Alex walked out. An unexpected surprise. He answered questions and people lined up for a brief one-on-one. I told him I didn't think I did well on the test. He said to "Take the test again. A lot of champions didn't pass the test the first time they took it."

Bob Clayton - during his announcing days on Pyramid, I got to talk briefly to him several times when he was leaving after the taping. A couple of times, I hailed a taxi for him. I sometimes found out things like pilots Bob Stewart was working on and when tickets would be available. A very nice and down-to-earth guy. Shame how he died. IIRC, Clayton and Cullen both lived in the same apartment complex at Sutton Place on NYC's east side.

I met Dick Clark and Geoff Edwards on several occasions since they taped shows in NYC.

Then there are hosts who I got close enough to for an autograph. No real long talk except to say "Thanks. I watch your show all the time." Usually happened as they were leaving the studio.

Garry Moore - TTTT taping
Gene Rayburn - TTTT taping
Joe Garagiola - TTTT taping
Jack Narz - TTTT taping
Allen Ludden - WML taping
Monty Hall - some special he did in NYC, don't remember other than that
Bob Eubanks - pilot he did in NYC, don't remember the title
Tom Kennedy - Arthritis telethon
Dennis James - Cerebral Palsy telethon

In La-la Land

Bob Barker - going into Studio 33
Johnny Olson - leaving Studio 33
Nipsey Russell - Rhyme and Reason taping
Wink Martindale - TTD taping
Richard Dawson - MG taping, before FF
Charles N Reilly - MG taping, he hosted Sweethearts

I may have forgotten a couple but there you go. Most of them are in that great game show in the sky. I have to look for those autograph books.

I've two hosts personally, both when then came to Charleston, WV

October 2015: Todd Newton when he came for "Price is Right" Live.  He must have met everyone in the audience because there were SEVERAL technical problems that caused a few stop downs.  The videos for the smaller prizes/products wouldn't play, so they ended up awarding all 5 Plinko chips and all 4 punches to the board.

June 2014: Peter Marshall and this was for the "West Virginia Squares" for the Charleston, WV Fes-tiv-all.  It was the most incompetent production I've ever seen and 90% of the audience left after the first half.  It wasn't Peter's fault, everything else failed him.

Chuck Woolery, who couldn't have been a nicer guy.  I was still in Minneapolis working for ShopNBC and he was a guest on the show before mine.  As a watch guy, the first thing I had to do was ask him about his Rolex (which he was wearing) and honestly didn't really chat about his game show career much.  My producer asked him about the whole "two and two" thing and he told the story about it's creation and evolution, a story I'm sure he's said a million times, but told it as if he was telling it for the first time. He really couldn't have been nicer.

Mark DeCarlo, and I've told the story before, because he never had a recording of his Sale appearances and I did.  We connected through youtube and began a friendship.  When he was in Minneapolis for work I set him up with some appearances on local TV to plug his book, and we met up very briefly at a film shoot he was on.  He wanted to meet for dinner but I, being the person who never should have been living in a cold climate to begin with, politely declined because it was negative 10 degrees or something.

Was friends with Ron Maestri for a while, and we'll leave it at that.

I regaled Merv Griffin with a story about Mark Goodson and we reminisced about Play Your Hunch prior to his first appearance on Larry King Live. Afterwards he said to me, "you made it so easy". That meant a lot coming from him. He was totally charming and smoked like a chimney, but I've heard he was not so charming if you worked for him.

Vanna White was on LKL to promote an upcoming TV movie. Totally sweet and charming.

I suppose Mark Goodson counts as an emcee.

I met Bob Barker at a couple of TPIR tapings in 2007 & met Marc Summers in 2003 at a Get Schooled Tour event in Kennesaw, GA.

While seeing TPIR & Bob in person was fun, it truly was a blast meeting Marc Summers.  I even won a shirt stumping him on a question about Press Your Luck's predecessor, Second Chance.  He didn't believe me & this was before the proliferation of YouTube & folks uploading shows there but gave me the shirt anyway.  I've been trying for a while now to find pictures from that event to no avail (was on old school film camera).

I have stories about Allen Ludden.

But will you share them?

Up above I was reminded that Johnny Gilbert was a host, so I’ve met exactly one, albeit by phone. He did a radio commercial I wrote in which he read fun things you get to do if you become a doctor, so I got him to say, “Resect bowels! Remove spleens! And explode kidney stones with lasers!” He did my voicemail greeting, too. Nice man.

Peter Marshall
I was working in production for a radio station group in Kansas City, c. 2005.  Just outside my studio door, I heard a very familiar voice. I jumped out of my chair to look into the hallway, and sure enough, it was The Master Of the Hollywood Squares himself! He was there with his son, Pete LaCock Jr., who had played for the Royals and later worked in their front office. Both were to be guests for an hour on our sports station. I chatted with Peter for a bit, told him that I had recently purchased his "Boy Singer" CD, and he autographed my notepad. Not sure, but I think Pete Jr. is still my neighbor.

Steve Harvey
We briefly worked for the same Chicago radio group, so I ran into him in the hallways a couple of times. He was nothing but nice and friendly. I also have a close friend who works on Feud these days, and has nothing negative to say about Steve.

Steve Allen
A true pioneer of television, he was a guest on my Chicago-based radio show for an hour one night in the early 1990s. I was in awe of the legend.

Bill Cosby
(He hosted a GS for a while, didn't he?) Same Chicago station (and around the same time frame) as my interview with Steve Allen, long before the general public knew about his nastiness, Cosby was my radio guest for around 15 minutes, late one night. He seemed warm and friendly.

Jim Hutton (not the actor)
THIS Jim Hutton was a TV personality from the Twin Cities, who had moved to Chicago in the early '60s to host a local "Hangman"-based game show called "The Letter Game". He also helmed the syndicated game, "Everything's Relative". I attended some tapings of "The Letter Game" at NBC's WMAQ-TV facility in Chicago's Merchandise Mart. I was only eight or nine years old when Jim and I talked about my dreams of going into broadcasting when I grew up. He was very encouraging to this kid ... although it's arguable whether I every actually did grow up.

Pat Sajak
At a Wheel taping in Nashville, where I worked at the same radio station that Pat had worked at many years earlier. We chatted for a bit between shows.

Art James
Never met him in person, but had some really nice, long phone conversations with him in his last few years on Earth. Totally lovable man.

There may have been one or two others over my now 50-year career in radio and television, but if there were, I can't think of them right now.

Tom Kennedy - At a meeting of the Game Show Congress. I held the door open for him but he turned away in anger.

Now you've got me curious. Any idea why he was angry?

Was friends with Ron Maestri for a while, and we'll leave it at that.
Saw him on an episode of Extreme Cheapskates some years back. He seems....eccentric.

Met Brooke Burns and Michael Strahan while a contestant.

Met Marc Summers at his documentary your. He was such a nice guy. Not so much on Twitter years later when he told me to "stop being so woke".

Ron Maestri was a contestant on Win Lose or Draw before he got the job hosting Quicksilver. The premise was kind of clever, but presented in a very understated way. Ron was hardly "Mr. Excitement", but I guess they wanted a low key host, and I don't think you could get more low key than Ron Maestri. When I was trying to find out why they called the show "Quicksilver", the only thing I could find was that they couldn't think of a better name for the show.

I forgot Bill Bellamy hosted a show. I met him at the Virginia Beach Funny Bone around 2010 or so.

Beautifully phrased.  Mind you, that was largely set-up (SHOCK, a reality show?!!!!)  But yes, good observation.

I have stories about Allen Ludden.

But will you share them?

Yes, but only in person. Anyone reading this who finds himself in the Hollywood area can hit me up and I'll pick up your luncheon tab.

Betty figures into some of the stories.
