It was a question of when, not if, a network or streamer would try and reboot "Lingo" given the popularity of the online game "Wordle," but the winning network may be a surprise.

CBS, which has been reluctant to go all-in on prime-time game shows over the years, has signed up to launch a prime-time reboot of "Lingo" for later this year, with RuPaul Charles hosting ...

In another thread I said I didn’t see a network touching this, and figured it would get picked up by GSN or a syndicator. I guess I’ll eat crow.

Of course, with RuPaul hosting, you have to wonder whether the pace of the show is going to drag.

Points!

Tasty. T-A-S-T-Y. Though, to be fair, I didn't see CBS picking this up. I'd have figured Millsy would have been all over it for ABC.

I don't think AC/DC would approve, but oh well.

Jokes aside, I wonder if they will go the route of the current UK version and just drop the bingo element altogether. Would be a tad disappointing, but not surprising.

They're apparently filming in the UK, so for sake of continuity with RuPaul's other show, we aren't likely to see any balls at all.

So RuPaul gets to host a show on a major network. I wonder how much the top prize will be?

If that's the case, then I would expect this on the air quickly, striking while the World iron is hot. May sweeps perhaps?

I wouldn't think sweeps, given CBS hasn't had much luck with nighttime game shows. Maybe it gets Survivor's time slot after the spring season.

The new British version makes for a long hour. I miss the bingo element and the host is a bore--and his repeating the guess and the spelling is annoyingly stupid--but even an hour of Chuck's version might be a bit much.

I tried to watch an episode or two of the British Lingo and it dragged. I do miss the bingo element.

I always thought Lingo would be syndicated and teamed up with 25 words or less.

That would have been something. For consistency, rename Lingo "5 words or less".

Based on internet reaction of late to the NYT version, me thinks CBS needs to get this show on ASAP... I think the buzz on Wordle is going to be completely gone if they wait too long.

I'm still waiting for CBS' Draw Something pilot.  Any day now.

Hopefully it will make it to air before OK Boomer premieres on Fox.

I just keep thinking about how Chuck Woolery and Michael Reagan are spinning in their graves right now knowing they were replaced by RuPaul.

And yes, before you correct me...I know. That's the joke.

Yes, basically that they're irrelevant to me. I wish both Chuck and Mr. Reagan well in their personal lives, but professionally...eh.

Well, RuPaul was on The Graham Norton Show last week, so we at least know the host was in the right country to tape the show...

Bumping this thread. CBS just aired a promo for Lingo on today's LMAD. Starts January 11, the same day as NTT on FOX. I'm hoping they're not airing at the same time.

If only there were a way for you to watch one when it airs, and the other at another time.

/someone get Don on the phone and tell him I want a goddamn concerted effort to come out of a record that isn't a fucking up-tempo record every time I do a goddamn DEATH dedication!

The following link is an online press release for the show:

https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/shows/lingo/

Click on the "Storyline," link and you'll notice that under the "About LINGO," paragraph, they mention about the show having "a boardgame, Facebook game, and app available."  It would be nice if a U.S. version board game will be available in 2023, and if the ratings of the series are good, I wouldn't be surprised if it all happens.  It would also be neat if it is 100% faithful to the show. '

There are nice photos and video clips at the site, too!

Found it interesting that the spot that ran on Sunday proclaimed it a "CBS original." I know they want to convey these aren't reruns from cable, but instead it comes across as the show never existed before

All sorts of shows are touted as "original" series in the "exclusive to this channel/network/app" sense. e.g. Netflix's branding their exclusives may have popularized that.

It's possible, but I know ABC's been doing that for at least a decade as well by starting their shows with "AN ABC STUDIOS PRODUCTION". To me it's a nice throwback to a different era, when Lorimar and Quinn Martin did the same during their opening credits.

I see that CBS is really pushing Lingo in promos.  At least 4 times within the early NFL games today.

Small data point: An ad for Lingo just showed up on the Buzzr stream on Pluto. No biggie, but it's the first one I've seen.

Clearly, they didn't think they were running nearly enough CBS ads.

I'd like to know what the gang thinks about the show.  The ratings seem to be declining week after week.  IIRC, episode five did well, and had a couple of amazing come from behind victories.

I'm enjoying it.  The different rounds give it some variety.  Ru is entertaining and moves the game along well.  I do miss the bingo aspect, but that ship has sailed.  I also like that there are two separate games and that they don't stretch a single game our for the entire hour (looking at you, Celebrity J!) :D

It's a mess of poor formatting and baffling production choices, and I made it through one episode and 10 minutes before dumping my series recording.

It’s okay but it feels too much like an event, if that makes sense. I know primetime shows are produced a little differently, but I don’t need all the theatrics for a word game. Also not a fan of the bonus round being a competition where the runners-up leave with nothing. But that’s a gripe I have with most game shows.

RuPaul is a decent host, however.

The game doesn't have enough variation or randomness to provide incentive to watch the next week, and what the game does have isn't presented in an interesting manner.

Last 4 eps of Season 1 have been pulled from the schedule and will air with Season 2 (I suspect this is insurance against a possible writer's strike so they'll have original stuff to show)
