Holy guacamole! :D This is exciting news - and I loved the format, even if it was a little convoluted.

BUZZR posted a YouTube video with a sample Gauntlet:

https://youtu.be/er4Tw_W-idg

The Vulture article also mentions the show has nearly 250 episodes...a quick Wiki check shows 247 taped episodes...I didn't realize that many had been taped.

Terrific!

I'm sure a couple of FB friends on the board are already over me pointing this out, but recall that Concentration and Whew were on the BUZZR survey a couple years ago, and brought out of the vault on Winc's channel first before ultimately debuting on BUZZR. I can only hope there's something to that considering there are also some nice studio master uploads of Scrabble and High Rollers too...which were also on the survey.

Anyhow, amazing news!

Is this the first format that has zero ties to Fremantle to air on the network?
A combination guaranteed to say wow, more than anything.

Starts 9/6.

Otherwise, hot darn. I'm sure it'll be appointment viewing once it's on the schedule.

Wouldn't that be Wordplay, as brief as it was? They also briefly had 20 episodes of Strike it Rich on their Prime channel, but those disappeared too.

Wordplay had some ties as it was co-produced by Syd Vinnedge's company prior to it eventually becoming part of Fremantle in a series of mergers/acquisitions.

Well this is one of those times that hell has frozen dinners.

And it’s also a way for them to get a little more commercial time- IIRC, Whew was in a 25 minute slot and not 30…

Kind of a stretch here, but I do understand that the British format ("Strike It Lucky") was produced by Thames Television, which ultimately got absorbed into Fremantle. It might be possible that Kline and Friends sold the format (and maybe the tapes?) to Thames.

Wow! That's a hell of a rabbit that Buzzr pulled out of their hat, and they've pulled some pretty big ones in recent years with Concentration and MG/HS. Looks like Buzzr must be making enough money to get some outside acquisitions or leases.

Whew without commercials times out to about 18:30 or so. More than plenty enough for a 30 minute time slot with modern day commercial-loads. Hopefully no editing needed, other than ticket and contestant plugs.

This was my second thought as well, immediately following "Wait, what? Really?"

It is wild that we're getting something like this (complicated, flawed, yet deeply interesting) back on the air. The Variety article mentions Fremantle striking a deal with Winc. to air the show, since they hold the distribution rights. What are some other Sugarman productions that could potentially make it to Buzzr now that this agreement is in place?

Well, there’s really only two others (Wizard of Odds and Celebrity Sweepstakes); I would have to guess the former is wiped and the latter is up in the air based on what I read from the info available.

Been holding out for Celebrity Sweepstakes since it was on the survey a couple years ago and a couple nighttime studio masters of eps 2 and 12 are floating around.

First off, my jaw dropped when I heard this news earlier today. Good work, Mr. Deetjen! More proof to "never say never". Speaking of that survey, Blanquepage, let's take a quick look back at that 2019 survey and the choices under the "What would you like added to the Buzzr schedule" question to see what's changed in nearly two years time:

Shows that have aired on Buzzr
*Concentration (Narz)
*Whew!

Shows that were supposed to air on Buzzr, but got pulled at the 11th hour
*25 Words Or Less

Shows that have their own Pluto TV channel
*The Price Is Right (with host Bob Barker)

Shows that were choices on the survey, but have yet to air on Buzzr
*Scattergories
*Wheel of Fortune
*High Rollers
*Win Ben Stein’s Money
*Remote Control
*Celebrity Sweepstakes
*Shop Till You Drop
*Scrabble
*Bruce Forsyth’s Hot Streak
*Jeopardy!
*Liar’s Club

There was also another question regarding relationship shows with Dating Game, Newlywed Game, and Bzzz!..the last of which can go into the "aired" section too. Thanks for the consolidated memory refresher! An interesting Watch List worth keeping an eye on as they acquire more content.

Holy 'effin A, Batman!

Gotta say thank you to Wink and John Ricci for helping make this a reality!  And thank you to Burt Sugarman for finally letting this show (and who knows what else???) come out of his vaults.

Hopefully, this show will be just as popular to the general public who watches Buzzr as it already is to us uber fans.

Looking forward to seeing that certain Detective face the Gauntlet (with all the Pomp & Circumstance, I might add) after an on-air injury weeks before on the show.

Looking forward to seeing the Randy Amasia shows "in the clear" without the NOT FOR BROADCAST bug on the screen.

This is gonna be fun!

/ And Pat, Faith and Debbie all thank you, too!

High Rollers I have suspicions about.  And it harkens back to whatever Fremantle accomplished to get MG/HS back on.  For they had to finally come up with a deal with MGM for the HS portion, right?  Which makes me wonder....could that open the door to get anything surviving from the H/Q or Orion libraries back on the air, such as Rollers, or indeed the "legit" versions of Squares?

Keep in mind that since MG/HS first started airing on Buzzr, most MGM properties were recently sold to Amazon.   And considering that Amazon Prime is the home to many on-demand Buzzr shows already, there's a decent relationship between the two entities, so it may not be as difficult as we may think.

Speaking of Mike’s page, I’ve always been curious about one thing and I don’t really understand why it’s a curiosity. Is the URL supposed to read “U.S. game shows”, as in United States, or “us game shows”, as in “ain’t nobody here but us game shows, ain’t nobody here at all”?

Years ago I had a long conversation with Jim about this. He said he had one, count it, one Celebrity Sweepstakes episode in his collection. (I didn't ask whether it was the pilot, the final episode, or something else.) I think he was just as delighted as the rest of us when that syndicated episode popped up on YouTube a few years back. I have no reason to think anyone knows of an unseen cache, so barring discovering a pile of tapes in the backroom somewhere, it ain't happening.

(It took me a few minutes to realize this was not referring to Card Sharks.)

I don't have firsthand evidence, but I'm just going to put these questions out there
- Why would we keep presuming that the syndicated version of a lost network show was also wiped or lost?
- What reliable subject matter expert has ever validated the series being lost?
- Wouldn't it have been silly of them to allow the wiping of a series in which they also saw near-term syndication viability? A weekly version premiered a few short months after network

As wonderful as Jim is, I wouldn't consider the host an expert on the tape preservation status of a series. What confirmations have been provided by the David Schwartz's or other trusted artifact curators of our hobby that I may've missed?

I once worked at a TV station that even in 1979  was airing / a.k.a. "cherry picking" programming from multiple networks on the same channel.  They were the only TV station in ttown at that time.

IBefore the building burned down, there was a closet full of old Nielsen books, including one ratings book while Whew was on the air.  I forgot what they aired in the timeslot Monday-Thirsday, (Wheel on NBC???) but according to Nielsen, they only aired Whew on Fridays.

Whew! was airing my freshman year in college. I purposely arranged my class schedule so I could watch it (if nobody else had the TV) on WWNY out of Watertown, NY, which was one of those "cherry picker" stations back then. Once I got home, it was cancelled three weeks later.

The news made my day earlier this week.

WTKR (then-WTAR) in Norfolk didn't air Whew! or Monty's Beat the Clock. Come to think of it, I don't think they aired any of CBS's 10:00 hour shows until Card Sharks in '86.

/Coincidentally, they aired Donnymid at 10am

One interesting part of the Vulture article (at least to me) was about how Winc. "had signed on to represent Jay Wolpert and producer Burt Sugarman and were trying to get them back in front of viewers". Heck of a chance encounter by the channel's GM, huh? Anyway, it makes one wonder if these Whew! reruns do well, you think we'll see other Jay Wolpert Production Shows in the future such as Blackout and Shopping Spree (assuming Winc. can gets their hands on the tapes, of course) or would these aforementioned titles be too obscure even for Buzzr?

With a library of close wins from a variety of shows they air (Body Language, Super Password/Password +, Sweep, NYSI, Classic/Narz Concentration, etc.), I'm surprised they just didn't put together a supercut of some of those and have some someone exasperate a "Whew!" at the end.

I took JJ's idea and put it together with similar ideas I had.  I did in half an hour (for free, mind you) what BUZZR couldn't do for more than free.  Ta da.  I don't usually do stuff like this but BUZZR's promos for Whew! have been bizarre and just downright bad, like nobody there had looked at its newest acquisition.

Nice promo.

You have 10 unique villains...Incorporate one or two of them in each promo and ditch Miss Muffett.  They should be focusing on the Gauntlet of Villains in their promos.

It's like trying to promote Press Your Luck with no mention of the Whammy whatsoever.

They finally did do a decent promo (using show clips) during P+, I'll share it here later tonight.

EDIT: Here it is... the promo they should've been running since they announced the pickup.

Well done. I had a similar idea in mind...close wins with only a matter of time left on the clock. Why they decided to take the bizarre route, I have no idea.

First, thank you for the kind comments.

Second, I really expected you to complain that I used a form of Arial in the video.  I know how much you love that font family. :-P

1. You're welcome.

2. I honestly didn't even notice until you said something. My "love" must've softened over the years. :-P

Yep.  The others were right down there with the "Tic Tac is Back" campaign, and at least some of those had some references to how you play tic-tac-toe.

Airing at 3:30 in Chicago, same time as Jeopardy. Now I get how some of the older folks here felt having to decide what to watch when two games ran opposite each other in the daytime.

The shows for Whew's launch marathon on September 5th are shows 1-2 & 4-7.  Episode 3 is being skipped.
https://buzzrtv.com/schedule/schedule_by_date/2021-9-5/America/Los_Angeles

The run then jumps ahead to show #0078 starting the subsequent Monday, in sequence from there, skipping 70 episodes.
https://buzzrtv.com/schedule/schedule_by_date/2021-9-6/America/Los_Angeles

The civilian part of the run did 133 shows, last one 11/2. Show 78 rewinds us back 55 episodes to early August.  Don't know the exact date, but 2-3? weeks before Randy's episodes ballpark.

That is a very large group of episodes being skipped, and regardless I am super excited to see this show.
(Links use the west coast timings since I live over here and so that's the version I use. Add hours for your time zone accordingly)

I'm ok with that. I think I'd enjoy seeing the show more after its gotten its legs under it a little. At least for starters.

For its entire run, “Whew!” was preempted on the first Thursday of each month for CBS’ monthly “Magazine” (titled according to the month, e.g. “April Magazine,” “May Magazine,” etc.). Assuming no further preemptions during the early months, episode #78 should take us to 8-14-1979.

Aside from “Magazine” days, there’s another possible preemption on 10-3-1979 for news coverage of the papal visit to NYC. CBS’ games apparently didn’t air in NYC on that day (they’re not listed in the NYT), but I don’t know how the West Coast feed was handled.

So, this should be close to, if not exactly right?

Whew! 79_0001 (original airdate 4/23/1979)
.
.
.
Celebrity Whew! 80_0273 (original airdate 5/30/1980)

This sounds pretty realistic.  I always thought the 247 number was too low.

Too bad they're skipping so many episodes - I wonder if it's to line it more up with the calendar - so when Tom says celebrities will be playing starting Nov 5th, it'll be pretty close to that date when they get to them (?)

Hopefully the skipped episodes will pop up eventually.

Do we have a list of the celebrities who played? I poked around some of the Wiki-type articles about the show and didn't see any. I count ~29 weeks of celebrity shows, give or take.

I am wondering if there is some subtraction to be done...perhaps some of the celebrities didn't clear their appearances? The only celeb shows I see on YouTube have Marcia Wallace, Gary Collins, Betty White, John Saxon, Mary Ann Mobley, and Robert Vaughn.

Also, that post-Thanksgiving week with no celebrities is interesting. Perhaps they saw a bump in ratings from November sweeps, and decided to make the format switch on very short notice.

Also, poking through YouTube, I found this Winker upload of show "A-131 D" with a VTR of 10/5/79, where Tom references the first celebrity week starting "next Monday." Whether this corresponds with Bryce's show 131, I'm not sure...it may be from the prior week of shows, as Tom emphasized "next" and didn't say "this Monday."

Wink also posted 132-D with the same VTR date.  Tom mentions that it's Halloween and to watch "tomorrow" for the CBS Magazine, and that they'll be back on Friday.  131-D most likely aired 10/30/79 instead of 10/31.  Looks like it could be one off.

There are nine TV Guides from early 1980 on archive.org, and looking through them yielded several weeks of celebrity listings for "Whew!" Not every consecutive week was available, and that causes a small problem: TV Guide ran Saturday-Friday, but because of preemptions, "Whew!" often changed celebrities in the middle of a week. While one would presume that five episodes were taped with each pair of celebrities, shorter or longer weeks are possible. In order to keep the data "pure," below I've listed only the dates that I found in TV Guide; my speculation as to the airdates of the rest of a taping week is in brackets.

Jan 7-11, 1980: Elaine Joyce & Sal Viscuso
Jan 14-18, 1980: Gina Hecht & Brian Patrick Clarke
Jan 21-25, 1980: Joan Prather & Jay Johnson
Jan 28-Feb 1, 1980: Roxie Roker & Richard Paul
Feb 18, 1980: Meredith MacRae & Jon Walmsley [rest of this week probably aired Feb 12-15]
Feb 19-22 & 25, 1980: Rita Moreno & Ross Martin
Feb 26-29, 1980: Mary Ann Mobley & Gary Collins [rest of this week probably aired Mar 3]
Mar 10-11, 1980: Jamie Farr & Dick Gautier [rest of this week probably aired Mar 4-5 & 7]
Mar 12-14, 1980: Marcia Wallace & Clifton Davis [rest of this week probably aired Mar 17-18]
Apr 28, 1980: Meredith MacRae & Jack Carter [see note]
Apr 29-30, May 2 & 5-6, 1980: Joan Prather & Robert Mandan
May 7-9: Roxie Roker & Dick Gautier [rest of this week may have aired May 12-13]

Note: I'm uncertain about the airdates of the rest of this taping week. After the April 3 "Magazine," new celebs should've started appearing on Thursdays until the next "Magazine" day. Possibly some shorter weeks were taped or there were additional preemptions.

To add to the above, in my own holdings...

* An episode dated April 8, 1980 with Trish Stewart and Jamie Farr
* Two episodes, dated May 20 and 21, with Mary Ann Mobley and Gary Collins
* Two episodes, dated May 22 and 23, with Marcia Wallace and Robert Vaughn
* The series finale, featuring Betty White and John Saxon.

This is great data, thanks for the research. Interesting that there aren't many repeat celebrities...looks like Marcia Wallace and Roxie Roker each did two separate weeks. Interesting that Mary Ann Mobley and Gary Collins may have had two separate weeks in Feb and May. Perhaps the May airing was a repeat.

.  According to TV Guide LA edition, the first week of celebs started Nov 5, 1979 with Carol Lawrence and Patrick (You Block!) Wayne. November 12 was Sal Viscuso and Carol Wayne (who could also be seen on Mindreaders that week) November 19-21 was Linwood Boomer and Mary Ann Mobley.  Back to regular format the next Monday.

The permanent Celebrity run started Wednesday  December 5, 1979 with Didi Conn and John Schuck
12/12-Richard Kline and Rita Moreno
12/20-Gary Collins and Trish Stewart
12/27-Robert Mandan and Michael Young.  That wraps up 1979.  If wanted, I can fill in the rest of the 1980 run.

Kline & Moreno started 12/12, or 12/13? I am trying to match the airdate schedule with the celebrity list, but if they started on 12/12, then they were on for 6 episodes while Conn & Schuck were on for only 4 (because of the pre-emption on 12/6).

The only other discrepancies I have are:
Richard Kline & Betty White only have three episodes (3/26-28)
Roxie Roker & Dick Gautier have six episodes (5/7-9; 5/12-14)
Also, John Saxon & Betty White only have two episodes (5/29-30), but those were the last two episodes of the run.

It all depends on the information given to TV Guide. Roker and Gautier were listed for 6 shows.

TV Guide also only had Bill Cullen guest hosting P+ for one week, when it was actually 4(?). The other weeks the listings had Allen Ludden.

Stations and networks had the right to make last minute changes.

One formatics question I’ve never really figured out—were the bloopers supposed to be more difficult going from left to right, or was there no other correlation and the bloopers placed randomly?

From what I've seen, the harder questions were worth more.

Quoting from Randy's website:

Difficulty increases horizontally, not vertically.  A $10 blooper is a $10 blooper is a $10 blooper.

They weren't trying to be vague about it either...I recall Tom mentioning a few times that the $10 bloopers were the easier ones and the $50 bloopers the harder ones.

"Whew!" indeed, what a fun 3 hours that was. I'm betting on why episode 3 was skipped...

(spoiler that references outcomes)

I think the idea was to both show how the series began, and chronicle the journey of the first long-reigning champ Andrea.
Lost & Found will probably show how it ended with episode 8; episode 3 was skipped because one needed to be skipped to lead up to the cliffhanger episode 7.
Guess we'll see?

Weird seeing a contestant forget to move up to the next level.

There was one round where Andrea solved a blooper on Level 5, then called for another amount on the same level, and they played it out.  Needless to say, despite that, she got up to and completed Level 6 just in time.

Not to mention the ability to keep the game on the rails when the wrong bloopers were flipped on the board or the wrong sound effect was played.

“Forget” or “padded her money”? Remember,  your time in the Gauntlet is based on how much money you make in the main game. If you have enough charging time left, why not answer an extra blooper and pump up your money a little?

Having seen very few episodes before now, I was surprised to see the amount of chargers getting to the top of the board and winning.  I had thought that was somewhat of a rarity.. It will be interesting to see if that changes as they get later in the run.

I didn't think it was an official option in the game.  With all the other miscues seen during the opening week and ½ eps., (wrong SFX'S, wrong boxes turned, late turns,...) that it was another oopsie, but they kept it in since everything ended okay.

I can't get BUZZR over the air where I live.  I tried going to BUZZR's website but I couldn't get it to load and the online stream wasn't working.  A couple of people I've traded with lately have also said they've been having issues lately and a lot of the time it hasn't worked.  The last time I got it to work was when they aired the syndicated Tattletales some time back - the few times I've tried it since then it hasn't loaded.

Tried going to PlutoTV but can't find BUZZR - can only see about 8 channels there and the search doesn't bring it up.

Frustrating, as I was looking forward to seeing this.  Hopefully the channel will get their stream working so I can maybe see some of the daily episodes.

I've enjoyed the clips they've put on youtube (and it's surprising how close to air they taped the initial episodes) I hope some of the full episodes will be posted online soon!

While I don't disagree with Adam's assessment, what positive gain is there by selecting 5-$20 in that situation, unless you know you earned $x80 or $x90, where that $20 equates to an extra second at the Gauntlet?  If a contestant hits a block at level 6 while earning that extra Andrew Jackson, that player can't win the round.  Risk vs. reward.  And all that's not taking into consideration that 5-$20 could be a block...

Was it the rule that you could solve more than one blooper per level if desired? I wondered if she called "Level 5, 20" out of nerves, not realizing she already solved one blooper in the same level.

IIRC, Ian is in Canada, so that's the main problem. I think Buzzr is geo-blocking the stream on their website and it's not on Pluto TV in Canada either. Not sure about the other two sites you suggested and whether they work in Canada.

Not sure how you’re trying to stream it exactly but here are a few direct links that might help get you there:

Pluto TV: https://www.pluto.tv/en/live-tv/buzzr

Roku Channel (you don’t need a Roku device if you’re streaming on your computer or mobile): https://therokuchannel.roku.com/watch/5b602e2bf2b9502ba0a6e715f540da56/buzzr

Distro TV: https://www.distro.tv/live/buzzr

Hopefully one of these will help.

I wasn’t realizing that. Yeah, geoblocking could definitely be the issue. I imagine Roku Channel has similar geographical restrictions to Pluto. No idea about Distro, though; it might be worth a shot.

Watching them again just served to remind that Tom was the perfect host for Whew. His energy level fit the pace.

Not to mention the ability to keep the game on the rails when the wrong bloopers were flipped on the board or the wrong sound effect was played.
It was quite amazing how many production errors there were early on... they played the "Times Up!" sounder a time or two, complete with the win music after a longshot was called. And after one of the bonus rounds they started to play a different music cue. ISTR most of the shows BITD seemed to not want to edit unless the game play was affected, even if it makes things appear sloppy.

I noticed that too - it seemed to take a few shows to get some of the kinks worked out.  I'd imagine this was a complicated show to produce.  It must have been kind of a rush job getting that board reloaded after every round - and most of it went unrevealed.  In looking at the slates posted on youtube, it appears they taped the first episode on 4/21 and the rest of the first week on 4/22.  Strange that they'd only do one episode the first day - maybe they had a lot of production issues and it took a while figuring everything out.

I'm in the Toronto area and I've been able to stream the site before, but that was a few months ago.  Now, whenever I try to go the site it just spins and spins and says the site can't be reached.  Strange that they'd even block the site from loading.  Even if streams don't work, the sites always load.  Something must have changed on their end.

None of those other links work.  Is it still possible to setup some sort of proxy server?  I'm not a big tech guy - unless it's intuitive I usually struggle figuring these things out.

There is a digital channel in Buffalo (about 60 miles away as the crow flies) that carries BUZZR, but it's a weak station and I think I'm just outside of their range.

Just out of curiosity, since I can't even load their site, does anyone have an e-mail contact address for them - maybe I could inquire?

I guess I'll have to hope that some of these episodes will find their way online (thanks Jamie for the earlier post - it worked fine).

Sucks.

The "contact us" e-mail address on their web site is askbuzzr@buzzrtv.com although since you are having issues reaching the site, I don't know if that will work for you.  Their e-mail newsletter comes from askbuzzr@buzzrplay.com although I suspects that one forwards to the other.

I've used ExpressVPN, and whenever I'm connected to another country the BUZZR stream fails. Perhaps the inverse would work for you, Ian. If you're up to using a VPN, give it a shot and connect to one based in the US.

I got error messages yesterday too, and I'm not in Canada. All three browsers had the message "The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported." (I watched it on Pluto TV.) Today I cleared my cache, and two of the three browsers now work--although I'm still getting the same message on Firefox, my primary browser. Strange.

It must have been kind of a rush job getting that board reloaded after every round

Yesterday, some friends and I were discussing that. As we watched the mini-marathon, we figured out that there were actually two game boards. On one board, the backlit 3 on level three was installed upside down and backward; on the other board, it's installed correctly. During the first week, there was also a different bulb out along the right side of each board's chase lights.

Ian, I would recommend trying out Channels DVR software if you have a spare PC available. It is a homebrew DVR that costs a few dollars a month, but it can easily give you DVR capabilities for Buzzr once set up.

https://getchannels.com/

You can set up Channels to pull in feeds from a free Sling TV subscription. I would imagine you’d need a VPN; I use NordVPN for my DVR setup and it works well. I have used the Sling TV feed of Buzzr to DVR a bunch of Buzzr recently, including Whew!.

If you or anyone else would like more info on this, please let me know. I am happy to write a step by step guide if there is interest.

It seems inconsistent.  Either that or they tried it and got negative feedback and dropped it later on (the eps from October WinC posted and the celebrity eps don't seem to have it)

Nice to see this other than the eps that have been floating around- didn't air in DC (neither did TPIR at the time) and our Baltimore reception was iffy at times so never saw it this clear before...

And interesting to see according to the ep that aired today the Gauntlet was only won about 1 in every 6 tries- with the length and pace of the bloopers in that round, looks like you needed to get 10 out of 12-14 depending on how much extra time you had..

I don't recall hearing that sound effect during the marathon on Sunday - my guess is the sound was added into the effects used a few weeks in

I don't remember it either (keep in mind I wouldn't have seen any episodes in the first eight weeks or so, except possibly on Memorial Day). Then again, I also "remember" that the "long shot block" was brown instead of red.

Was it the rule that you could solve more than one blooper per level if desired? I wondered if she called "Level 5, 20" out of nerves, not realizing she already solved one blooper in the same level.

Digging deep into archive.org, we find from Randy Amasia's rules release:

When charging, I may not proceed to the next level until I have correctly answered at least one blooper on that level

So, yes, you were allowed to select again from the same level.  Or to be more accurate, it's another way to penalize a charger that's not paying attention.

Edit: listen to Tom Kennedy's tone right before she went to the next level.  This was planned for.

It was added later in the series.  And somewhere along the line, they killed it off sometime around the Celebrity era.

Speaking of sfx, I am so glad that they changed the charging bell to the familiar CLANG we all know and love.  The one they used at the start just never felt right.

And was anyone else scratching their head after the first Gauntlet win on Sunday's marathon?  It was a subdued celebration. ‐‐ before I knew it the music was over (they used a short win cue) and the set wasn't going as apes*it as it did later in the run.  I'm glad they changed that as well.

Has BUZZR been doing this with any other shows lately?  In what I've seen of the network (from a trip to Florida in early 2020), plus episodes I've traded for, they've left all the "stay tuned for..." plugs in.  Are they editing them out of shows like Match Game now too, or just Whew!?

This show went back and forth with 3 directors over the course of its run; first it was Bill Carruthers, them Tom Trbovich, and later Chris Darley (who also directed "Second Chance"). I'm guessing the SFX came and went with them.

I played it several times, and I'm pretty sure the charger, Annie, answers a blooper on the top level with "wedding ring" just starting her answer before the buzz-buzz for time. The correct answer was "rings." Did they bring her back? Or are my old ears mishearing this?

Listening to today's rerun with a pair of headphones, I hate to disappoint the nostalgia lovers out there, but BUZZR indeed cut out Rod's "Stay tuned for 'The Price Is Right'..." plug at the end. After Rod says, "This is Rod Roddy speaking", if you listen very carefully...you can hear  a little bit of Rod saying "Stay" before they quickly fade it out.

Whew! reruns on Buzzr: Now with 5 seconds more theme song!

I understand why Buzzr has to cut out addresses and phone numbers, but this extra expense still baffles me. Are there Buzzr viewers who get upset when they don't receive the episode of Tattletales that Johnny Olson from 1976 promised them? Is there some issue with the phrase "these CBS stations," even though there are plenty of references within assorted shows to being on CBS or NBC? I don't understand why they're expending the effort to make these edits.

Maybe since Buzzr is officially a broadcast network, there's some legalese behind that (but no word on why the plugs from the first 5 Whew episodes or the other shows' plugs weren't cut).

That has been the policy that promos for other shows that the station is not going to carry has to be covered up. Promos or voiceovers.  Don't know if that is still the case.

I've seen a couple of these now, and you can definitely hear the jump in the music.  I don't notice any jump in the video though...so it appears that they're editing the audio track and must be fading the video a few seconds early so the audio and video fade together.

They did.  Not sure what the episode numbers were, but since Alan Emrich's episodes have been in the trade circuit for a while, we figured out the airdates as July 30 - Aug 6, 1979.  The episodes being aired now came a week or so after that.

Something I thought about as I watched part of the marathon and the doors opening for the Gauntlet, revealing the huge "$25,000" sign....That was the most a daytime game show offered in 1979, no? Pyramid maxed out at $20K, and daytime Feud was only $5K, just to name a few.

I think that was the most a daytime show offered for accomplishing one thing (winning the end game). It was possible to accumulate more than $25K on Card Sharks, High Rollers, and Hollywood Squares since NBC only limited the number of games a contestant could win.

A perfect Money Cards win on Card Sharks at the time was $28,800, but as a static prize the Gauntlet of Villains would have been the highest I'm aware of.

In the second game today, Debbie was on the fifth level with time nearly expired. The answer on the blooper was "film" and as the clock hit zero, she yelled "FILM-LONGSHOT!" They let her play the longshot since she said it as the buzzer went, but since she gave and was credited for the correct answer (it turned to an arrow) wouldn't she have been on the sixth level and thus unable to call a longshot?

Seems they're lax about this sort of thing when they have a mini-marathon of the premiere week of new shows.  MG/HS's first week of episodes = the only ones to keep the entire fee plugs mid-show and end-show.

/And that threw off the timing of show/ad break whenever they aired.

Since she did not utter "Level 6...", it sounds like an action that is similar what we discussed earlier -- you can stay on a level after correctly solving a blooper.  So once you call the next level, you cannot go back.

Noticed something on the first game of the second episode. I played it several times, and I'm pretty sure the charger, Annie, answers a blooper on the top level with "wedding ring" just starting her answer before the buzz-buzz for time. The correct answer was "rings." Did they bring her back? Or are my old ears mishearing this?
When they came back from commercial, Tom said that she had indeed answered the blooper but not within the two second time limit.

He does indeed say that, but assuming the buzzer is at the two second time limit, she absolutely beat the buzzer as seen at 5:21 in this video:

And of course, Sunday's airing started with last Monday and Tuesday's I believe.  Despite my cable info calling the eps 1.7 and 1.8.

I remember a number of episodes where Tom says the buzzer is 1/2 second after the time expires.

Good to know. That's probably the case, however that's not how a buzzer is supposed to work

Boy, talk about letting the pressure of the clock get to you. You hit the block on thr 6th level, still have 4 seconds, and then stupidly call for the longshot blowing your one chance to win the round. I don't think he knew the answer anyway but still...

You are correct - when Tom asked in the postmortem the contestant did not give the correct answer.

So, tomorrow should be Pat Aiello's first appearance, right? Assuming we've all been counting right, that is.

For all the production sloppiness we saw in the first week and miscues, they were making up for it on this episode.

Looked like there was a near seamless edit during Annie's run on the Fun & Games board.  If you notice closely, around 24:15, looks like they took "Gossip" as an alternative answer to "Telephone" after a likely stopdown and so they picked up the round from there, starting with the bell clang.

This advice from the late Mr. Amasia addresses something we've been discussing lately:

Quote
If you’ve solved a Level 5 blooper and you have at least :20 left on the clock (granted, this is highly unlikely), go for the most expensive Level 5 blooper available — remember, once you’ve solved a blooper on a level, you’re free to charge wherever you want to. It’s potential extra money.

And not only is it extra money, you could pick up an extra second for the Gauntlet which may end up being crucial.

The only problem with that is, if you have at least 20 seconds left, even if you miss a Level 6 blooper and get a block, you should have enough time to solve the remaining blooper. That extra $50 is meaningless if you lose the round as a result.

Unless I heard wrong, on the episode broadcast 9/15, in the Gauntlet of Villains, one of the bloopers said that Father's Day was "the second Sunday in June." Had it said "third Sunday in June," there's a chance the contestant would have gotten it right, and almost certainly would have won the $25,000.

The next two shows (Friday 9/17 and Monday 9/20) are shows we know all too well with our dear, departed friend Randy Amasia.

Greg and myself went down into our archive and found that we had a great copy of his first show tucked away. It had a surprise that I was actually curious to see - the 5 minute CBS Mid-Morning News that aired after Whew!

I clipped it out and put it up for everyone to see if you'd like:

I literally this morning was looking for any of the 5 minute news that came on after, to see what it looked like! Thanks!

Also very glad the episodes with Randy are included. It's been awhile since I've seen them. Nearly 20 years ago. Time crept up rather quickly.

Anyone: Does Randy's old fanpage still exist somewhere other than Wayback? I spent a couple minutes looking without success, and then I got lazy and decided just to ask here. :)

I wanted to add onto Adam's response that Kris Lane and I are going to be updating it more often because of the reruns.  We're looking to add more pages and fresher images, while keeping Randy's handiwork intact.

I gotta admit I got a kick out of this clue:

"ON THE COMIC STRIP 'PEANUTS', LUCY VAN PELT IS OBSESSED WITH SEX."

And for those keeping track, Rod did plug TPiR during the closing.

Good episode.

Somehow it never occurred to me the new contestant had a pretty good advantage being the blocker twice in a two-out-of-three match since they'd already seen the champion's charging tendencies.

So that's why they always have that real long commercial for Car Shield at the end, to fill the gap. By the way, Douglas Edwards was the CBS anchor before Walter Cronkite took over in 1962.

There've been quite a few bloopers that I'm surprised Buzzr let fly...maybe the censoring doesn't apply to Whew, for some reason? Or maybe they're just singling out midgets. -shrug-

Here's a note for the good of the order.

The NYT gave details as to network coverage of the pope's visit to NYC in the following article, which helps to clear up what was pre-empted at the network level:
https://www.nytimes.com/1979/10/03/archives/itinerary-today-in-new-york-and-philadelphia-tv-coverage.html (https://www.nytimes.com/1979/10/03/archives/itinerary-today-in-new-york-and-philadelphia-tv-coverage.html)

The NYC stations gave more extensive coverage than the networks did. NBC started at 10:15 eastern while ABC and CBS started closer to 10:45. Network coverage likely ended in the neighborhood of 11:30 to noon.

So for the CBS games on the Eastern/Central feed, "Beat the Clock" aired as normal, approximately half of "Whew!" was pre-empted, and (per the FAQ at golden-road.net) a half-hour rerun of TPIR from 1977 was used to fill that slot.

For the "Whew!" episode guide, the celebrity episodes indeed start at #134 on 11-5-1979. All airdates and non-airdates (due to "Magazine" or holiday programming) should now be resolved at least until March 1980, when we have the anomalous Betty White/Richard Kline week that TV Guide only listed for three episodes. Time will tell whether it was a shorter week or the listings were wrong...
