One of what, only 130 made? In the original box, this prize for Whammy! S2 runners-up can be yours for the low, low, $ale of the Century price of $1,710 (https://www.ebay.ca/itm/RARE-Press-Your-Luck-WHAMMY-Croton-Diamond-Character-Watch-in-the-Original-Box/274677685257?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3De2ab519b383f492087f8a24441269403%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D274677685257%26itm%3D274677685257%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26brand%3DCroton&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ab00383f5-7719-11eb-b030-3ad7d520a783%7Cparentrq%3Ad73c1efc1770aaecf68e342bffc9ca16%7Ciid%3A1) plus shipping and handling.

And it’s reduced, too!

Just outta curiosity: how much would one of those have cost new? If they were to sell to the general public.

Going rate for the absolute bottom-of-the-line Croton watch is $15 (https://www.crotonwatch.com/collections/mens/products/mens-quartz-watch-with-silvertone-case-and-black-dial-and-tan-strap). So prolly $10 back then?

True, but this is marked down quite a bit. Which seems to be the case for all of the watches on the site; wonder why.
I would figure, considering what cartoon character watches (good ones) can go for, $50 wouldn’t have been outta the realm.
-
It can now be yours for the low, low sale-of-the-century price of only $1,500.
I really don't get this. Virtually all of his other watches -- including some I would think were much more desirable -- are priced at $100 or less. He appears to be equating scarcity with value, and that's not always the case. I have a Bill Cullen signature Zippo lighter, and I'm sure there aren't more than a few dozen of them in existence, but that doesn't mean they're worth $1500.
-
Precisely. Sure, it's the only one I've ever seen pop up on eBay in the 18 years since the show went off the air, but when you're asking Rolex prices for what's effectively a Mickey Mouse watch, I don't see you getting too far.
/we're almost as far from Whammy! now as it was from the original PYL

Listing ended. For now. (Only saying this because I think he’ll try again.)
-
Decided to dive a little deeper into the seller’s offerings.
He has a crapton of watches for sale. And I mean crapton. Some of them are really pretty cool, admittedly.
But like the Whammy watch, he’s asking way too much more than a lot of them are worth and not a single one has any bids on it. It’s a nice collection, but who did his valuing?
-
It's back, and now for only $1000.
It looks like this guy is going to Dutch auction this thing until he gets his sucker.

Yeah, $1000 is still too steep. I'm intrigued but no way am I paying more than the cost of a vowel.

I'd even say $250 is steep, small diamond and all.

Annnnnnnd it’s gone. With no bids again.
If he lists again, over/under on asking price?

$555 or Spin Again.

I'd trade him straight-up for half a Gem car.

Dream: sell my "rare" Lingo watch on eBay for $1,000
Reality: sell my "rare" Lingo watch on eBay for $10.
Sigh.

You know, the thing is some of the watches he has are pretty cool. And a few are reasonably priced.

First rule of Ebay: It only takes one.
Matt nailed it, it only takes one. I have been around for a long time on eBay. The things that make me shake my head in disbelief.
It is like the special "rare" board games because they are 50+ years old. Old does not equate to rare, nor does it equate that that $75 price tag on your first edition Password game with two ripped corners an a missing card . . . until someone pays that much for it.

Not quite on topic, but I could see myself paying 25.

My thoughts exactly. Rare =/= valuable.
Dream: sell my "rare" Lingo watch on eBay for $1,000
Reality: sell my "rare" Lingo watch on eBay for $10.
Best I can do is bout tree fiddy.

I still remember the 3Ws game I found at the old B&G club I used to go to. Awesome condition, and all the pieces, but I guarantee it wouldn’t fetch much on eBay. (And I wish I had convinced them to let me have it.)
-
If at first you don’t succeed, keep trying until you do. Nine hundred bucks now. (https://www.ebay.ca/itm/RARE-Press-Your-Luck-WHAMMY-Croton-Diamond-Character-Watch-in-the-Original-Box/294064894800?pageci=07b8b672-468a-4000-910c-ef844e462053)

Down to $800. I've never sold on eBay, do you have to pay for a listing if it's unsuccessful? Just curious how much (if any) this effort is costing.

This is the slowest episode of Sale of the Century I've ever seen.

No. A percentage of the final sales price goes to eBay.
-
A couple weeks ago, I put in an offer which was quickly passed upon. Slowly but surely we are making our way towards the price I had in mind.

It's good but it's not quite right.

The most I could see myself paying for that would honestly be $50. Maybe $75. It isn’t the rare exotic treasure this guy seems to think it is, but it’s just saved by the fact that it’s a Croton and an interesting one at that. The Whammy does bring some value but not eight hundred bucks’ worth.

Okay. Here’s a prime example to me of why this guy is effing up.
Here’s a link to one of his other watches for sale.
Guess who? (https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Animated-Woody-Woodpecker-Walter-Lantz-Character-Watch-in-the-Original-Box/274726552029?_trkparms=aid%3D1110002%26algo%3DSPLICE.SOI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200122151703%26meid%3D0e89f45bd96c4e5f87aa187b38182827%26pid%3D101096%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D294064894800%26itm%3D274726552029%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2332490%26algv%3DPromotedSellersOtherItemsV2%26brand%3DUniversal&_trksid=p2332490.c101096.m3021)
While $45 is a little high for a watch like this, this is the kind of market value he should be targeting. To me, the value is pretty similar. Yet he wants $45 for the Woody watch and $800 for the Whammy.
