Title: GSN and Match Game?
Post by: familyfeudfan on February 21, 2004, 04:46:09 PM
In a new gsn commercial, GSN has put a pacman overlay on Match Game to advertise their video games documentary. What's next TTD 90?

That doesn't mean that GSN has cancelled Match Game.

How does one logically conclude that GSN is ditching MG just because they put Pac-Man over it to promote a documentary? I'm not interested at all in the documentary [since most likely it'll mostly be about PlayStation and X-Box and I'm more of a fan of 80's Nintendo and arcade games] but still, I don't see your logic.

EDITED: OK, he meant "dissing" MG, not ditching. My original question still stands. BTW, are they "dissing" Match Game by putting the "OUTRAGEOUS!" bar on it in the Hosts Gone Wild promo?

I know that, i just mean that they don't have any respect for match game any more.

If I'm thinking what you're thinking, most TV channels don't have any respect for their TV shows anymore. Many of them now have animated promos that run on top of the program that they are showing. In some cases, including sound effects.

This is one of the reasons why I don't watch much TV these days.

I'm not buying that conclusion.  Another promo had Asteroids supered over a clip of Lingo, a show that's not going anywhere (that I know of).

All this talk of the video game documentary makes me wonder if Starcade would fly in a new version on GSN or G4. The folks at JM productions seem to be still interested in their franchise, though video games aren't at their peak of popularity(they probably were during Starcade's original run)

Only if Geoff comes back. That way he can keep the contestants in line by going into Sinistar mode and saying "Beware, I live! Run coward!" :-)

Millionaire, Match Game and Lingo are receiving relentless promotion on the network. As folks have noticed, they're even getting plugged as part of the campaign for the video games special.

I can't blame GSN for flacking the shows that rescued their prime time schedule from the disaster of late last summer. But just once it would be nice to get through thirty minutes on the network without seeing any blurbs for the threesome.

Isn't it likely that GSN had this documentary in the can long before the Video Games block tanked, and that they're showing it because, well, it makes no sense to produce the thing and let it languish?

Granted, by that logic, we would have seen the last two episodes of the 2003 LMaD.

You're exactly right. (Or close to it, at least.) In a Cronin interview a few months back on the topic of the now defunct GSNVG's, Cronin mentioned a documentary about the history of the video game running in conjunction with the debut of GSNVG's.  This documentary fell off the face of the earth when GSNVG's was given the axe.  I'll bet ¢15 and a genuine kick in the pants saying that this would be that same documentary.

As with all GSN programming, I say give this a chance before making assumptions like this. Any video game history worth a damn that doesn't cover Pong, Nolan Bushnell, the Atari 2600, and Pac Man simply isn't a true history. (And Sony and Microsoft have their places in history, too.)

I fully agree....As someone who picks up "High Score!" and "The Complete History of Video Games" every time he goes into Borders, and also as someone who has liked video games since the age of 6, I am looking forward to seeing GSN's take on it...

Do you mean "The Ultimate History Of Video Games?" The 600-page tome? I received that for Xmas, and I'm reading that now, and I can't recommend it highly enough, it's about as complete and accurate as one could ask for so far....

After checking on Amazon, yes, my mistake - "The Ultimate History of Video Games". I honestly don't know why I just don't bite the bullet and buy the book, as it is an excellent one..."High Score" has out a 2nd edition as well, but that's mainly pictures, IIRC..

I should look into that. Not a thing wrong with a mostly-picture book, especially when it's mostly pictures of old, great video games! :)

EDIT: Oh, wait, I have this! (The first edition, anyhow). Yes, a lot of pictures, but they are excellent ones, and there is a lot of great information in there as well!

And you should also check out "Phoenix: The Rise and Fall of Video Games" by Leonard Herman, which I believe I also brought w/me to GSC11 last summer...large chunks of it were used as part of the bonus materials to Atari Anniv. Edition Redux for PS1.

Wonder how a promo with a What's My Line clip would look? Imagine a video game superimposed during Dorothy Kilgallen's questioning!
