16mm film version of the episode of Password with Betty White hosting while Allen plays from March 27th, 1975 has popped up on eBay.
I'm a total clueless newbie when it comes to this stuff, how easy is it to digitize something like this?
-
That would depend entirely on the outlet. You'd have to find a professional who could make a DVD transfer and the rates would vary.
Are you the bidder on this?
-
Are you the bidder on this?
Nope, nor am I the other one!!
-
This might be the sort of thing to bid collectively on (contributions from several members) if it could insure winning it. The March 14, 1975 issue is in circulation where Mark Goodson plugs Betty hosting in two weeks so this would be from that week.

If someone with connections for digitizing this wants to organize it, I'm in for contributing.
-
I would also contribute.
-
I am also willing to contribute!
-
I’ll chip in too.
-
Count me in as well!

We did something similar with a pilot 3 or 4 years ago, Make Your Move. (The title might be different. I have effectively erased it from my memory since then.) With that, I'm in.
-
Yeah me and Greg will contribute as well.
-
I would be interested in contributing as well!
-
OK I'll spill: I'm currently the high bidder. However, I'd be happy to join this community effort. My max bid is set to $175.
-
I'll chip in, too.
-
I'll chip in as well. Although I am expecting a bidding war to commence between us and the Paul Williams fan community.

I’m in.

In.

In for this one too!

Would someone kindly remind me of (or point me to the thread) what I missed out on the last time the Forum took up a collective effort for something rare? Thanks!

I’ll put a share in.

The bidding I notice suddenly shot up. I hope no one is this forum is doing that since if we have one designated bidder that all of us can contribute to it should work. I've done this before with sports auctions and we've also seen collective efforts work on rare WML kinescopes that turned up on e-bay (and which are now on YT)

Well, yes it's been me since very early this morning. In a few posts prior to this one though, I expressed that I'll end
my solo bidding and am more than happy to join the forum pool.
-
I'm in. Last time it was kept private among the winners. I'd be fine with this, or perhaps not sharing it until after a few months.
-
I'd also like to contribute to the effort.
-
As would I.

Count me in too.

I’m in too- and as an aside, there’s also another Allen Ludden item up too- “You Owe It To Yourself”

https://www.ebay.com/itm/373149599279
From the description:
“This was a game show that was underwritten by the National Association Life Underwriters and aired on Public Broadcasting Service Television. This was a ten-part series that covered various aspects of money management and family finances to show what life insurance, health insurance and estate planing could accomplish for the family's security. Using the quiz show format, the series, created and produced by WITF-TV, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, was made possible by a $75,000 grant from the NALU. Allen Ludden, nationally known quiz-master of "Password," was master of ceremonies.“
(There’s 2 of them available- and the price is lower than the Password one FWIW)

Ok all, if this all works for you, let me know.
My current max bid is $175, and $150 is still highest reached bid. I'm happy to be the designated bidder, and I'll still spot the first $150 as I'd love to have the reel itself in my collection after it's been digitized. Beyond that, it'll be a community effort. I wasn't part of the Make Your Move pool, so if there's a better way to go about this let me know.
- All interested parties PM me with your email address and commitment to spot an additional $25
- I'll track everyone's contributions and enter a new bid on Tuesday to the total sum of said contributions
- Everyone's contributions would become due upon us winning the auction
- Payment receipt preferred via Venmo, Chase Quickpay, or FB Messenger
Thoughts or concerns?
EDIT: This would become a collectible private amongst the invested collectors, so as far as I'm concerned, the video would not be posted on Game Show Vault.

Great response thus far, I would only ask that you send me a PM with your email address to track your official contribution commitment. Or just email it to me at flyingchai01@gmail.com
After chatting with a couple of folks, I'll be submitting the final max bid closer to the end of the auction. I will still follow up with all the contributors though via email on Tuesday with the status of our collective bid and will notify everyone prior to submitting the final bid.
Thanks,
Jamie

I'll chip in as well.

I'm fine with keeping the result private, though do wonder if eventually it makes sense in an archive somewhere, especially since the moment is significant in american television. Would Betty herself want to see this?
-
I'll chip in as well. Although I am expecting a bidding war to commence between us and the Paul Williams fan community.
Which is probably that one guy they made the Paul Williams documentary about. Look it up. Its actually good. Paul Williams is Alive is the name < i think >

Paul Williams Still Alive is the name, in fact!! I love Paul Williams, he rules.

On that subject, I didn't end up getting a copy. While I thought my Paypal transaction went through, Matt O. told me it didn't, which left me mortified and I remain upset at myself about it (and my terrible posts in that thread) to this day. Not just because I didn't double-check that the money went through, but because at least some of it was going to be part of the big charity donation.
Sorry for the off-topic...

Oh, this was so much fun the last time around. I'm in!

I'll contribute to this. What a great find...!

The final selling price was $227.50. Great job, ya scamps!

$227? I didn't know Jackee pitched in :P. Awful jokes aside, congratulations on your newfound treasure!

It will be fascinating to see. 1975 may seem late in time for there to be kinescopes of anything but Armed Forces TV was still using that process as late as 1976.
-
So, at what point do we get to discuss how AWESOME this was??? Haha

LOL, Well, I had figured it would be a matter of time until the dust settled and those who didn't mind the world knowing that they earned themselves a copy would want to talk about it.
I'm just a little hesitant for the sake of those that couldn't participate, don't want to make anyone feel excluded.
I'll say this, it'll be my favorite single episode for a long time to come. Well that's it ;D
-
I was willing to contribute either way, but since bidding ended, is it still possible to do so?
-

I regret not, because the transaction is already completed for both the film reel and digitization, all for which was equally split. You'd now basically be paying cash for just a copy of the episode :-\
-
I'll just say this. There are two moments in the episode that I suspect would have made it a "censored" episode by Buzzr had the tape still existed.
-
Dang it, was planning on Emailing and forgot to do so. Donate to a charity? Is there any other episodes on eBay to go after?
-

I've been trying to figure out exactly what Paul Williams said that they blanked it out.
-
He said "sailor". But it was how he said it and the fact that this was Armed Forces TV that resulted in the censoring which I think was probably left alone in the original ABC run.
-
I don't think so, Eric... because you can barely hear the trailing end of the word the first time he says it, and it sounds as though it ends with "--eet". It definitely ends on a "t" sound.
From watching his lips, I think it's actually "sweet", but in any event, clearly said with a lisp... which is what got it blanked out.
I have no idea how you'd get to "wave" using that clue, but apparently it worked...
- Kevin
-
I may have been influenced by Betty's aside after that about "they can't keep you out of the navy for that any longer". If that's what it sounds like I'll defer on that point.
Paul's clue for "watermelon" *really* would have put this on the banned list most likely.

I thought it was "straight", enunciated as "steeeee-raight" followed by a rather feminine flourish.

A shame as I'd love to procure a copy of this as well.
