Title: Supermarket Sweep questions
Post by: cmjb13 on June 11, 2020, 09:39:52 PM
A few questions as I’m watching Supermarket Sweep episodes circa 2000

Do teams know they will be playing before they are called or is it a surprise like Price?

I saw an episode tonight where one team member grabbed an item for the mini sweep that was so close, she could have backtracked. Instead she ran further away, looped around and ran towards David.
I gather they are told they have to run down a certain aisle?

They shoot the audience in the beginning, but is there an audience during the big sweep?

To answer your last question, I remember Randy West saying once that the audience watched the Big Sweep from another room.

Is the audience even an audience? I assumed it consisted of all that taping day's contestants. There are mirrors on either side of the audience to make it look bigger. If you look closely, you can see "audience members" standing up and walking in the opposite direction of the contestants.

It does, plus some extra people that I'm going to assume were paid audience members (they're easy to spot, as they're not wearing name tags and each person is holding a grocery, rather than one grocery per two people).

I suspect that they shot all of the "Okay, you're on!"s at the beginning of the taping day. It would explain how a camera is able to materialize behind the audience to shoot the third team running toward the contestant island ('cause we didn't see a camera there while contestants were running down) and how the people in the front row change when they cut to that behind-the-audience shot. Also, the third team is no longer holding their grocery.

They apparently did that with all of the segments. (https://tv.avclub.com/what-was-it-like-to-be-on-supermarket-sweep-1798271210) All of the "Okay, you're on"s at once, all the chats with David at once, all of the question rounds at once, all the big sweeps at once.

Likewise. I never knew that about everything being taped in segments.

Here’s a previous thread where this was discussed:

I have no proof, but I would think that the contestant interviews and both halves of the front game questions would be taped in the proper order. What would be the benefit of taping five sets of contestant interviews (which took place after the first mini-sweep) before playing the buzz-in questions?

I held off on linking to this because I assume it's bad form to cite your own video, but here's evidence that they taped all of the day's mini-sweeps before the day's big sweeps:

I could see them doing it in 3 segments with the front game, big sweep, then bonus round, but that's about it.

Also, too many sweater changes for David would have made him statically charged.

Can I give plaudits to Scott for that amazing editing and compilation job?

I just read an article in the last couple days that mentioned it was a surprise, but the three teams were selected from a group of about 10.

Although, that had to apply to the Lifetime years; the PAX era had the contestants run out from behind one of the aisles.

Quote
We knew who the six people [on any given episode] were going to be, but we maybe had 10 people in the audience who had the products [that could potentially be chosen]. We knew who had which product, obviously. And though we weren’t calling Bob and Betty, we were calling the Lorna Doone cookies because we knew Bob and Betty had the Lorna Doone cookies and those were the two we wanted. But they didn’t know, so there was that little bit of extra excitement. Now, of course, the minute you had something go wrong with the camera, you had to restage it. If that ever happened, unfortunately we had to tell them, “Get as excited this time as you did last time.”
