Title: Wheel, Jeopardy & others suspend production due to coronavirus concerns

Hadn’t seen a post about it here, but this story is making the media rounds today:

Smart considering what both hosts have been through.  Plus it'll be easier to mask than, say, Price is Right.

Obviously Alex is immunocompromised, but also don't forget that Johnny Gilbert is 95.

Jimmy Kimmel showed a clip of what TPIR would be like without an audience on Tuesday night's show.  Awaiting post here or find it elsewhere.

Here in Italy a recent "anti-virus" decree banned (among other things) all gatherings of people and enforces a 1-metre minimum safety space.
All entertainment shows are now audience-free and gameshows are expected to follow suit when they run out of episodes taped before the decree.

This is Identity, the first to go "closed doors":
https://imgur.com/gaECkmC

The contestant is using a "Close Encounter" help. Previously it was allowed even to touch the Stranger, but now this is how close the encounter can be.
https://imgur.com/vvXDtcs

In our version the value of each Identity is hidden in a passport. Normally the host walks over to the Stranger to collect the passport and reveal the value, now the Strangers do the reveal themselves.

Initially, TPIR was going to thermally scan folks and bar those who've traveled to Level 3 countries from entering TVC going forward starting next week. Now with California's large gathering ban (of 250+ people), they have cancelled tapings for the next two weeks.

Conversely, Millionaire looks like it's going audience free now for the Kimmel run, saying that they're going to "suspend live audiences."

"It's a four-way tie."

It's kinda odd (even under the circumstances) to see the game show that made audiences on-camera a thing.......go without an audience.

Thanks for your kind words :)

update: Identity is canceled. The last episode is airing tonight.

Television schedules are changing by the day. Some entertainment shows were outright canceled, others are cutting their season short, a few are still somehow running regularly:  Celebrity Big Brother is a notable example. This is what the set looks like now. https://imgur.com/7h9AYqh

What ABC Fun and Games have already taped their episodes for this upcoming season? -- We know PYL is already complete, and IIRC, Pyramid was scheduled for April, IIRC.

Having been in the audience once (during the first few weeks of taping), there's really no need for them to be there. Other than applauding during the appropriate times, we had to keep our mouths completely shut for obvious reasons, plus the stopdowns threw things off. And I was sitting right next to the monitor from which Regis read the Fastest Finger question--it occurred to me that he was irritable enough (first new format for him in over ten years), so looking directly at him while he was reading it might have annoyed him.

TTTT taped in November, PYL taped in January, CFF taped in February. Card Sharks was to tape this month, Pyramid tickets have been out for next month. No idea if those tapings will go on as scheduled. No clue on how many Match Game episodes are held over from the previous season or when more will be taping.

Having been in the audience once (during the first few weeks of taping), there's really no need for them to be there. Other than applauding during the appropriate times, we had to keep our mouths completely shut for obvious reasons, plus the stopdowns threw things off. I feel like part of it is that the audience being there adds a layer of drama, both for the at home audience and the contestant in studio, as the anxiety builds to whether the person in the hot seat would give the correct answer.

I hear you, and to us, it's no biggie for the reason you mentioned, but it has to suck for the crew who does this as freelance. As a freelancer, I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little nervous right now.

Also, I updated the thread title to more accurately reflect the current situation.

Jeopardy has announced that the 18-month clock on contestants' eligibility after an in-person audition is essentially frozen for as long as production is stopped (they worded it as extended by an amount equal to the length of the stoppage.) Not surprising, really.

To help with providing content because of the early production shutdown, starting May 4th, Jeopardy! (https://www.jeopardy.com/jbuzz/news-events/icymi-jeopardy-greatest-all-time-encore) will repeat the Greatest of All Time matches in eight half-hour chunks, which will be bookended by rebroadcasts of Ken Jennings' first and last games from his 2004 winning streak.

Did you put her on hold for a few minutes, then come back and tell her that you talked to Sony and in a few minutes, they'll stand farther apart just for her? :P

As said previously, what a time for Mike Richards to take over Wheel and Jeopardy. Obviously production can't resume right now, but how does this affect retirement timelines for Pat/Vanna/Alex? If I remember correctly, they're all signed through 2021/22. With both male hosts having recent health issues, does this hasten any of those timelines? Considering that Alex has always wanted a low-key retirement announcement, it wouldn't totally surprise me if he did it during this shutdown.

With Harry leaving and Mike coming in, I wonder which would lead to more wild speculation: the hosts retiring right before Mike arrives, or them retiring after a year with Mike.

California governor Gavin Newsom has announced that some parts of the state can resume television and film production as early as next week, as part of the plan to reopen the state.

Sadly, this does not apply to LA County, where pretty much all game show production is currently taking place.'

J! is going to run out of original episodes on June 12th (so one more week after the Teachers Tournament ends tonight), and no word on when they'll restart production- WOF is going to sprinkle in their remaining new episodes with reruns over the summer.

https://tvline.com/2020/06/05/jeopardy-reruns-start-date-last-new-original-episode-coronavirus/

(Based on the Vanna interview that was posted elsewhere, I'd think Wheel is closer to restarting than J! is)

French TV is already doing shows with plastic dividers between contestants, surely it would be pretty easy to just put up the Final Jeopardy panels all show?

I obviously can’t speak for everyone, but I doubt anyone at home is going to want to watch contestants play a game wearing masks or standing 6 feet apart.

I’d bet these shows would likely do heavy testing with temperature checks and whatever other protocols they will follow before they go the mask and distance route. But maybe there’s just too much money involved and they will wear masks. Who knows?

I’m also getting kind of tired about hearing that a vaccine will be the be all end all. Who knows what will be in that vaccine that may cause side effects 10-20 years down the line?

I don’t think the Final Jeopardy panels extend above a person’s face, and they also aren’t physically between the people’s bodies - they just block the view of the writing area.

Read an interview with Vanna  that says that Wheel is renovating the contestant area to account for social distancing. I would guess it’s got to include glass dividers, right? Cause if they don’t build a bigger wheel to increase the amount of space on the contestant rail, six feet would put Pat almost directly across from the blue player.

Having the contestants stand at 90° intervals around the wheel is certainly possible. Pat doesn't have to stand at the wheel.

Wheel of Fortune in Greece has recently started back up production with the contestants at individual podiums away from the wheel with the plan being that each player steps up to spin the wheel when it's their turn and stay there as long as it's their turn. Seems like the simplest fix for every version of Wheel and honestly, individual podiums would probably work best for Jeopardy too.

An easy (maybe tongue-in-cheek, maybe not) solution: Paint the pegs alternating red, yellow, and blue, and tell the players they have to grab their own pegs.

I'm surprised they aren't moving production wholly to NYC or Stamford; Meredith is in Westchester so it would be six of one, half dozen of another.
