Title: America Says enters syndie game
Post by: colonial on June 12, 2019, 12:52:18 PM
In a bit of a surprise, Deadline is reporting that GSN and Sony will offer "America Says" for first-run syndication this fall.

Deadline says it has already been picked up in 85% of U.S. markets.

I don't think a large company like Sony would distribute reruns. Most of your cable shows that go into syndication (i.e. Pawn Stars) are distributed by smaller outlets. I can't think of the last cable show to make the leap to first-run syndication...I think Baggage was reruns.

Is NATPE still a thing, or at least as big of a thing compared to 20 years ago? It just seems odd for a syndicator to announce a new show just three months before the fall season.

Also, is 25 Words or Less with Meredith Vieira still going national? If so, that would bring us to about a half-dozen syndicated games.

With the departure of WWTBAM, timeslots  opened up.

I saw Nexstar listed as one of the companies...Thinking WHTM in Harrisburg will plug in AS at 12:30 to replace FYSA.

Jimmy's explanation about timeslots for Millionaire makes sense. I could see WVBT replacing that at 3 pm.

It'd certainly pair well with Family Feud, since they're essentially the same game.

Be interested to see where it ends up in New York. Fox and CBS are mentioned, so I figure WWOR or WLNY will carry it. I would bet the latter; I don't know what their situation is with Funny You Should Ask but the hour that follows is opening up due to the cancellation of Face the Truth.

I'm more curious as to the fate of RightThisMinute...was there any word as to whether or not that was continuing beyond this season? Have to figure the ABC O&Os won't hang onto it, at least not at any decent hour.

Double Dare?  I'm pretty sure Debt was reruns as well.

I've seen Cash Cab in local syndication.

Again NOTHING IN THE STORY SAYS FIRST RUN.  Especially  this late a date it is almost certainly reruns of GSN episodes. Just like Baggage.

Marc Berman at Programming Insider says first-run syndication.

What about Finders Keepers? That one went to first-run syndication as well from cable.

Yes, as did Remote Control.

Reruns, IIRC. I think Mark is right about Double Dare and Finders Keepers, or Remote Control as you said. I'm honestly surprised GSN hasn't tried syndicating their more popular shows before now.

Feud and America Says may be nearly the same game, but America Says at least has stayed family friendly and would be good alternative for those (like me) that aren't too keen on Feud's turn to "Match Game" style shenanigans. I always liked Match Game... but Match Game is Match Game... Feud is Feud... but what do I know, Harvey's not going anywhere and he's done the show for 10 years now.

Harvey reportedly makes a good salary for FF. I've seen unconfirmed rumors on the internet that next year, when it's time to renew his FF contract, Harvey will either be replaced or asked to take a salary cut. Again, these are rumors, so who knows?

As for "America Says," I think it's one of the better GSN originals. Now that's it's going national, they may produce more episodes so they have enough to go a full season.

How many weeks does a full syndie season consist of these days? 30? 35?

America Says has produced 160 episodes (34 weeks) to-date.  The article says "first-run syndication" but a logical interpretation of that phrase could also suggest that the reruns will be seen for the first time in (broadcast) syndication, hence first-run.  Unless that term is a recognized "industry standard" term, perhaps?

In the case of Baggage, they called the reruns "off-net syndication" (http://www.timessquaregossip.com/2012/05/jerry-springers-hit-baggage-syndicates.html), which is basically a fancy way of saying "reruns". I'm not disputing your theory, but I would think it's misleading to call first-run episodes reruns, unless they're episodes that simply have yet to air on GSN.

Meanwhile, Cash Cab (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/caa-launches-new-business-summit-young-executives-1218599) made no mention of off-net or first-run.

Actually, 160 episodes amounts to 32 weeks, not 34. But that's probably enough for a full syndie season.

Geez, they beat Wheel despite a weaker channel lineup, how big a margin does Fremantle expect? It’s not as if prize money eats up their budget. Not to question your sources, but it's hard to imagine them risking what they’ve built on finding a cheaper yet popular capable host.

I’ve not minded the bashful old ladies giving dirty answers as much as the insanely tacky, long-past-surprising euphemisms on the board.

My sources are basically YouTube bloggers. The "wildest" rumor about this I saw was that Harvey will be replaced by Michael Strahan. Considering that Feud is done in L.A. and Strahan and his shows are done in NYC, I don't see this happening.
