Title: '70s flashback - the 52-day Mediterranean Cruise
Post by: That Don Guy on April 11, 2019, 07:24:51 PM
I mentioned this prize in another thread, but I was wondering...what shows had the "52-day Mediterranean Cruise" worth something like $11,000 as a regular prize?

The three that I can think of off the top of my head:
Name That Tune (in fact, one of the qualifiers for the first $100,000 tournament had to skip it because he was going to be on the cruise at the time)
Pro-Fan
Dealer's Choice (which later replaced it with the opportunity to win a car worth about half that much, and even then, only if you reached a certain score in the main game)

I assume some of the shows offered it under the assumption that very few people would keep it, given that:
(a) it had to be taken within a year, and there were only two sailings each year;
(b) if you had a job, good luck getting eight consecutive weeks off;
(c) you still had to pay tax on the $11,000 value.

Treasure Hunt ‘81 had the cruise as well.

I think Wheel offered it as well. For some reason, I wanna say one of the big winners that appeared in the "Dream Machine" tournament won the cruise.

70s nighttime LMAD offered it from time to time as the Big Deal.

I thought it was a 52 day cruise around South America?  I'm trying to locate a clip of the prize although there may have been a 52 day cruise of the Mediterranean but even if you stopped many many times, it doesn't take 52 days to sail around the Mediterranean.  If I have to eat crow, I'll take it medium well.

I had that thought too— 52 days around South America would not only be a slow boat but there are lots of ports of call as well.

And so did Hollywood Squares I think in the prize package for the five match champions.

There's a Newlywed Game episode out there featuring returning players.  The winning couple got the cruise; the losing couples got $200.

I figured getting eight weeks off was the primary issue - which was why most Dealer's Choice contestants seemed to be housewives and/or guys in their 30s and 40s.

None of which occurred me at the time - probably because my (long-retired) grandparents had taken a Holland America cruise through Europe of a similar length a few years before.
