Title: Home Viewer Contest Winner Question...
Post by: TimK2003 on January 05, 2019, 09:36:05 PM
This is related to a similar topic brought up in a Radio Broadcasting chat room:

On game/quiz shows of the 50s and 60s, whenever a home viewer was playing with either an in-studio contestant, or was chosen as a winner of a prize, the viewers name and full address (Jane Doe, of 123 Main St in Burbank, CA).

When did the practice change to just divulging name and city only -- without specific street addresses? And was it an FCC edict that covered both TV and radio at the same time?

I'm not sure if it was due to legislation per se and more to a cultural shift- if you look at newspapers in the same era, you will find similarly precise detail involving people's addresses, including for notables.

I doubt that the change was mandated by the FCC. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it started after somebody got robbed, and the networks (and everybody else that released addresses) realized that fewer people may enter because of it. Even with the TPIR (the Barker-era) Home Viewer Showcases, Bob would dial the winner's phone number, and if you tried hard enough, you could work out the number from the touch tones. (You can get around that now by "renting" 555 numbers, which can forward to other numbers - Vince McMahon did this for a WWE contest where he called people live - and which is the main reason all of the TV and movie 555 numbers are all now 555-19xx.

Then again, I remember when PBS local auctions would reveal the names and cities of winning bidders, then changed it to just the cities, then stopped doing that, so it's possible that there was some law involved, although this didn't start happening until sometime around 1980.

555-01xx (http://555-01xx), I think you mean.
