Title: $25k Pyramid
Post by: TLEberle on March 25, 2017, 02:46:56 AM
How far did we jump ahead?

The "NEW" is gone from the logo, $50/point is no longer an option for the 7-11, the Mystery Seven is a bonus card like the 7-11, and the winner's circle lights are white instead of blue.

Who were the celebrities?

Teresa Ganzel and Charlie Siebert.

(21-21 tie now awards $5,000 bonus money to the winner too.)

November 1987 apparently.

Well then. That's kinda odd. Thank you for that.

These are ones previously leased, no? Or was that the short "revival" from the following April-July?

My cable box's info says this Monday's show is from November 4, 1987.

I don't know about the recent past, but the latter '87 eps. and the pre-Feud, post-Blackout shows were shown ~15 years ago.

These episodes from late 1987 on were definitely shown in the last lease, as I have some recordings of these.dated from 2014.

Actually, the last couple of days have been bizarre: On Wednesday, they played an episode from June 1983 (Deborah Adair & Terry Lester). Thursday, they played an episode from March '83 (Florence Henderson & Earl Holliman) and Friday was the aforementioned '87 show with Ganzel & Siebert. Why all the jumping around is anybody's guess :-/.

I'd be a bit disappointed if they permanently jump to 1987.  These 1982-83 shows are a joy to watch - they are a bit more rough around the ears than the later shows.

In all the years that 80s Pyramid has been aired, has the second and third seasons been repeated (83-84 and 84-85)?

I know those are the two seasons that have yet to air on GSN, can't recall if those ever aired on USA, though.

Nope. There's a gap from September 1983 to April 1985 that GSN has never aired. There's also a gap from April-September 1987 that they've never shown. I'm pretty sure they all aired on USA though.

GSN Did something similar with random episodes back in December.  So hopefully next week they'll continue with the 1983 episodes.

According to TitanTV, Monday-Wednesday of this week are more from the Ganzel/Siebert week and then on Thursday they go back to the premiere. I guess we've hit the end of the episodes in GSN's current cycle. It looks like it was 200 episodes again, just like the previous three leases.

This past week on Pyramid they had Nipsey Russell and Audrey Landers and the premiere of the new bell that sounds for correct answers. It's lower pitched that the school teacher's desk bell they had been using.

Zap2It shows GSN starting what's apparently a new cycle of $25,000 Pyramid this week. Their listings show them continuing with the Deborah Adair/Terry Lester week they left off at in March. If it's another 200 episodes, that would take us well into April 1984, meaning most of this bunch hasn't been seen since the USA days.

I also just noticed it's been exactly one year since the last cycle started airing. These leases have been for two years in the past, so it's interesting that they're moving on after just one year this time.

Starting today (6/23), they're airing the Michael J Fox week. He won $10K for his partner in his first try in the Winners Circle. Not bad.

So, I'm not watching nor recording Pyramid as often as I should, but I happened to watch on 7/4 and had a question as to what GSN did. The first episode aired was Richard Kline and Linda Kelsey, which Dick identifies as airing on 7/4, a Monday. The next episode that airs features Patty Duke-Astin and John Moschitta Jr., which Dick identifies as a Friday. I assume Duke-Astin/Moschitta was what was airing in the normal rotation and the Kline/Kelsey episode was specifically chosen by GSN. Dick's comments mean Kline/Kelsey was 7/4/83. How far removed from the rotation would that make it?

BTW, great 1st WC in the 7/4 episode. Kline and partner make it up in 30 seconds.

Three weeks prior to where they were. Duke/Moschitta was 7/25-29/83. This means if nothing is skipped, Tony Danza's diva fit sole California week will be aired starting this week.

Does Dick reference the Billy Crystal record setter afterward? I remember watching a pretty fast WC win back when the reruns aired on USA, and I seem to remember it being during the first season. I was also bummed they didn't have the 20K clip on standby.

He does. He says at first "twenty-something seconds" before looking offstage and being incorrectly told "twenty-eight seconds." Though I'm not faulting some producer offstage for being two seconds off on a record they probably hadn't thought about in years.

In case anyone's curious, I've worked out that, if there are no further skips, the second show on July 28 will be 9/19/83, which is notable as the first one in this incarnation that had an opening montage.

Another thing, tomorrow's first $25kP installment will be the first to feature blind contestants. (I remember seeing this particular episode when it originally aired.)

I was in college at the time. If memory serves, I had class at that time of the morning. VCR's weren't something the average student could afford at the time, but I had a tape recorder and a plug that could connect to the TV. I ended up "watching" the show the same way the contestants did!

This morning (7/28) on the 2nd Pyramid show with Audrey Landers and Charlie Siebert, there was a contestant named John who was on SOTC and ended winning all the prizes on that show. IIRC he had a crush on Summer. Also, the categories in the WC round are now lit in white instead of blue.

Sounds like it. I wonder how long they're going to do the canned applause-less Winner's Circle. It's kinda eerie.

/LaRae Dillman was on a week or so ago--she won big one day, stuck around for a couple more and was defeated.

I haven't been watching GSN in I dont' know how long now, and I didn't know there ever were Winner's Circle rounds where there was no applause between categories until I ran across one posted on YouTube.  Is it the case then that for every round played, it always played out this way and the applause was just added in post?  It would certainly be less distracting for the players, but why not leave it that way in the broadcast?

Nerdy thing about the new openings: at least right now, the flashback wins appear to be tacked onto an already-taped episode.  You can tell because in later shows, the announcer says "From Television City in Hollywood" over the last win.  These are announced after the wins.

How many weeks did Jerry Bishop announce the show?  I thought he only did it a couple weeks in early 1983, and was was announcing today's week (later 83).

John Gose did quite well on Pyramid. He stayed on the maximum five days and ended up winning over $38,000 in cash and prizes, including a trip to Japan and a video recorder. Not too shabby.

Apparently there's a handful of folks who turned the double with Pyramid and Sale of the Century: LaRae Dillman, Barbara Phillips (she was a runner-up in the third $100,000 tournament), and Rani White (I don't recall how much she won on Pyramid).

My TiVo's only saving five of these shows at a time (need to change that setting) but for the second Wednesday airing, which was the Markie Post/Richard Kline week, the backgrounds of the WC trilons are now white, and tiebreakers now are settled before the commercial break. My guess is that this all happened on the Monday of this Post/Kline week but possibly the week before, didn't get a chance to watch any of those shows.

Mitch, the tiebreakers played at the end of the first and/or third segments of the episodes began the same week the "We've Got The Touch" campaigns and the PYL promos first begun airing: September 5-9, 1983. Don't forget, the white WC boxes and the WC boxes going shaky when the $25,000 win occurs began the week prior: September 19-23, 1983.

Just a heads up, GSN's online schedule shows them jumping ahead to May 1985 (Patty Duke vs. Brian Mitchell) on August 24th. We'll have to wait and see if that's just an anomaly or if they really are going that far forward.

So I just happened upon the episode where Rani White is a contestant and for a runner-up she came out fine: She won the 7-11, $5,000 for a 21-21 tiebreak and $550 in the Winner's Circle.

It's interesting to see how few and far between the bonus wins have become in the mid-80s episodes that are airing on GSN right now.  The last 6 weeks of airings they've averaged around 2 wins/week.
