Title: Card Sharks Returning in April!
Post by: xavier45 on March 19, 2010, 03:02:19 PM
Zap2it has posted the schedule for April 1st and 2nd on GSN. Everything in the afternoon and evening is the same, but the morning and overnight schedule are getting makeovers. The new morning schedule is:

9:00am: Family Feud (Dawson)
9:30am: Card Sharks
10:00am: Card Sharks
10:30am: The $25,000 Pyramid
11:00am: The $100,000 Pyramid
11:30am: Match Game
12:00pm: Match Game '78
12:30pm: Family Feud (Dawson)

Overnights
1:00am: Family Feud (Karn)
1:30am: Family Feud (Karn)

3:00am: Card Sharks
3:30am: Card Sharks

No clue as to which versions of Card Sharks those slots will be, but whoever it is, it will be great to have the show back on the schedule. Unfortunately, Password will be going away. That also goes for Jeopardy! I believe this is the first time in GSN's history that Jeopardy! has not been on the schedule.

A step in the right direction, if I may say so myself.

Oh, and I take back what I said earlier. I would much rather have a channel that "rerun abuses" the G-T library, than a channel that "rerun abuses" Unstapled, Hidden Agenda, and Instant Recall

This appears to be consistant with the theory that GSN no longer has access to the entire Fremantle G-T library, and instead licenses individual series as they need them.  It was, after all, just about a year ago (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=17479\") that the major purge of G-T product occurred.  I think it's not a huge logical leap to assume that they paid for a year's worth of Password, and now that the year's up, they've picked up Card Sharks to replace it.

Yeah, can't believe it's been almost a year.

And weren't there news articles on the internet about the G-T library being up for renewal again at that exact time?

April 1st...a THURSDAY? That's an odd time to roll out a new schedule. I hope it's not a cruel April Fools joke. And yes, this will be the first time in GSN's history that Jeopardy! has not been on the schedule. This will now make Family Feud the only show that's been on GSN since day one.

If the lease for Series A expires on March 31, and the lease for Series B begins on April 1, what else would you expect them to do? Violate their leases just so that everything wraps up into a nice and neat little package for people who even care what day of the week the schedule changes? Air infomercials in the slots they can't air other shows anymore?  Yet more Karn or Howie?

Is a mid-week schedule change slightly atypical within the business? Sure.  Is it unheard of? Certainly not. Heck, Hallmark Channel changes their schedule now on a near-weekly and sometimes daily basis, often with little notice.

Buzzerblog has posted the changes, and now add one more show coming to GSN. It will be Million Dollar Password. The show will air Saturdays at 6:00pm and 1:00am Saturday night.

BTW, GSN will be airing the Perry and Eubanks versions of Card Sharks.

Gotta say, I'm not down with the lack of a daytime Jeopardy!.

Ah well, here's hoping it eventually comes back with pre-sushi set seasons.

I'm not sure if GSN is even remotely interested in those seasons anymore.

Hasn't it been proven time and time again that Sony won't allow GSN to show 1980's episodes of the show anymore due to "outdated information", because average casual viewers find those episodes to be "too hard" to play along with?

Interesting how they're doing it--the 4/1 morning airings will start at episode 1 for both, then the overnight airings (early 4/2) start at episode 100 for both.

Also of note, both FF daytime airings go back to 1980 (episode 80-100 at 9AM ET ["September" was somewhere in the early 200s, IIRC], 80-001 at 12:30 ET).  And MG goes back to 1974 in both episodes (very early--the 1/3/74 and 1/4/74 eps to start).  They bail out of the 1978 run just before the day Carol Burnett and her posse visit her own studio.

Steering this conversation back to Card Sharks...

According to the PDF for the week of 3/29/2010 (http://\"http://www.flashgameshows.com/wordpress/scheds/3-29-10.pdf\"), the morning and late night runs will start in different places.  Morning run with start at the beginning of both runs.  The late night runs however start at Episode #100 of both runs.

According to Jason Wuthrich's guide (http://\"http://members.fortunecity.com/gswarehouse/csguide78.html\"), #100 will be 9/8/78, and according to my old Eubanks guide (http://\"http://www.nicholasmooneyhan.com/epguidearchive/cardsharks86/\"), #100 of the Eubanks run puts it at 5/23/86.

/Bookmark those links, they could be helpful
//Remember someone mentioning a while back they'd like a Eubanks CS guide
///Thank god for the Wayback Machine
////Will update the Eubanks guide with missing info
/////Most slashies ever? Probably not

EDIT: Dang you Doug, must post faster...

I've been beaten enough to the punch--it's about time my fingers flew faster.  :)

And count me among those who'd like a Eubanks episode guide.  You wouldn't happen to know the OAD of the episode where the ostrich wreaks havoc (pretty sure it's late 1987, as Bob Goen appears to plug BLACKOUT)?

I never got that far back in 2001-2002.  Never heard about that episode... maybe we'll find out someday.

Somehow I doubt GSN gets that far this cycle.

What I do know--it was a Kid's Week show, set's decorated for Xmas (although it could have been the week after as well) and Goen makes the cameo.

Here's a YouTube link (skip to about 1:07--don't know how to plug that into the link):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajb87uDShbU (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajb87uDShbU\")

I'm assuming both versions of Pyramid just continue the current re-rerun cycle, correct? (ie no "new to you" episodes)

There was another time (in the late '90s) where they made changes part way through a week, so it's not even the first time GSN has done this.

Every network tinkers with its schedule all the time, especially the little-watched daytime hours.  They are dropping two bona fide Greatest Shows Ever (Password and Jeopardy) and replacing them with one moderate Fan Favorite (Card Sharks).  If you're a fan of the latter and you've missed it, then hey, good for you.  Enjoy.  Still, I have a hard time thinking that this relatively minor change heralds some new Age of Enlightenment.  It's a minor business decision, nothing to get worked up about.

So GSN acquires another million dollar game show hosted by Regis. I'm looking forward to the two shows with Betty White and the show I saw in person, with Rosie O"Donnell and Tony Hawk.

Down the line, I see GSN getting the FOX network version of 5th Grader and the syndie DoND since that's gone in September. Maybe even Drew Carey's Power of 10 and ABC's short-lived Duel. The latter two would have to air weekly since there aren't that many episodes of them.

Card Sharks will give the daytime schedule a little more variety.

I know I've heard this before, more than once, but why would Sony be the party concerned with whether the information contained within the '80s shows is outdated or not?

They wouldn't be concerned one iota. What you've quoted is a warped justification that emerged among some folks for why GSN never leases any 80s stuff from Sony.  It's easier for some people to rationalize the idea that "GSN doesn't lease the shows in question because Sony won't let them" rather than acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, GSN simply doesn't *want* to lease 25-year-old reruns of Jeopardy when they can get something a little newer.

Exactly, and thanks to both of you for pointing this out.  The original comment runs dangerously close to posting false information on our board.  Nothing of the sort has ever been "proven" because it's nonsense.  Honestly, I don't even hear the rumor that much, though I'm rarely on the GSN boards anymore.

And while we're at it, let's get used to the notion that Sony != GSN.  Sony owns a portion of it, Liberty Media owns the rest.  It is its own entity.

I'm going to need withdrawal therapy. Jeopardy is my crack pipe. I work nights, and the 1AM showing was a nice way to wind down after signing off.

$M Password seems like an odd acquisition, as there are only 12 episodes. Then again, there aren't rhat many more eps of 1 vs. 100, and I can't get enough of it.
