Title: All New All Star Beat the Clock
Post by: whewfan on September 01, 2008, 10:40:14 AM
Yet more evidence why it was such a bad idea to devote the entire series to celebs, instead of a week.

Bobby Van and Elaine Joyce actually looked like they were having a good time, and so did Mitzi, but Charlie Brill (without mustache) looked less than thrilled. He didn't seem bored, just that he did poorly with the stunts, and looked embarassed and bummed out when he lost.

Monty, also, seems a little out of sorts dealing with celebs. He did better with real people.

Beat The Clock and Whew! were fine with just civilian contestants. Whoever the dumb butt was who even suggested that STARS! be added to those shows in 1979 needs to be cracked across the skull with a tractor. At least The CBS Mid-Morning News With Douglas Edwards stayed untouched.

I notice Charlie Brill always had an air of "when is this thing over?" whenever he appeared on a game show.  Mark Evanier notes on his Magnificent Marble Machine entry on OldTVTickets.com that Charlie was kind of sarcastic and cynical there too (again, because he didn't play the game very well).

I think Bobby Van had already been diagnosed with a brain tumor by this point; he was probably happy to be anywhere.

This was post-Make Me Laugh, wasn't it? If so, did this week of shows represent Bobby's final appearances before the camera?

No, he did the Mrs. America Pageant the month before he died, according to a tribute site.

IMDB has him appearing as a celebrity judge on Dance Fever over a month after his death, but I don't know how accurate that is.
