Title: Highstakes Poker is done!
Post by: xavier45 on May 14, 2008, 09:39:53 PM
After 2 years as the top rated show on GSN, the network has decided that 4 seasons is enough for the all cash game. The president of Poker Productions told CardPlayer.com that GSN owns up to 50 episodes of the series and can air them for another 10 years. He also said "GSN is moving away from Poker and casino related programming. He says "GSN is probably trying to figure out how Poker can fit in their programming schedule".

The site says that GSN's license with WPTE expires on May 24th. They have the right to refuse an extension on the contract, and it is not known if they will extend it.

Never was a HSP fan, so I am not bothered by this. It is great that they are finally leaning away from this programming.

There is more on this cancellation on pokerstrategy.com. One of the hosts of HSP, A.J. Benza seems quite upset at this cancellation. He said the following:

"'Far as Gabe [Kaplan] and I know….the show isn't coming back. Apparently…the network is going to go in a different direction and that ain't good news for our show, especially since we skew a higher-aged audience. Never mind that we’re the network’s No. 1 show. Still and all, no one calls us from the network to say squat. Only Kevin Belinkoff checks in periodically, but it just don’t seem like good news. If you ask me…they’re treating us like ____. All we ever did was make them a bunch of money."

From that same article, it is said GSN is making a new poker show. So it seems they are not going away from Poker, just away from HSP.

If GSN isn't going to poker anymore it should go back to the classics.  The Classics will make GSN great again.

The article mentions they are making a new Poker show that looks to be a close match to their "Ace In The House" that was aired this past December.

[/quote]For some viewers, yes.

For financial purposes and ratings?  Doubtful.

Plus, there are plenty of classics on GSN, right now.

While there may be some gripes about some of the things that they currently do, at least the classics that are on GSN right now are better than no classics at all.
