FYI, Xavier: when you post ratings, you need to cite your source, with a link if available.
-
Sorry about that. I got the link up now.
-
It's only a drop of 13,000, which isn't even 10%.
Looking at other ratings, I find it amusing that Court TV is doing significantly better than MTV. Also, what is NAN? I can't think of anything off the top of my head and it wasn't covered previously.
/I do know that C is for cable. (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=13089&view=findpost&p=155482\")

I didn't know 17 people could register a ratings point. The more you know! :)

Incidentally, July's rating is the same as, IIRC, May's rating. The network only had a mild upturn in June that's probably more to do with the random fluctuations of the Nielsen system than anything. GSN's been ranging between around 175,000 and 185,000 for a few months now. It's not good, but at least they haven't fallen out of the top 50.

Oh...to have NHL back on ESPN again...they did a pretty good job with it...and it was easier to find.

There has been some rumblings about how that might possibly happen, especially considering how Versus is tanking and how Comcast doesn't seem to be moving forward very quickly on the US version of NHL Network that was supposed to be part of the deal.
I'd like Thorne (and maybe Clement, if NBC would let him go) back. I would rather not have The Mouse treating the game as a fourth-class citizen again, considering they have significant baseball, basketball, and football deals. So I'm torn: I want the game to expand because I truly feel it's the greatest game in the world; I don't trust ESPN to help them, but there is no really viable alternative if Versus keeps tanking.

Hell, I didn't realize you could get a 1.0 just by running Roseanne, Fresh Prince, and Cosby into the ground.

NBC hasn't really treated it well either - especially leaving an overtime game in last year's Conference Finals - but I know their ratings haven't been very good.
I think it did quite well on ESPN for a while. It got good enough ratings for them to keep it on the schedule for many years - and come playoff time some nights it was on both ESPN and the Duece as well. Maybe they'd have a chance of increasing their ratings if it went back.
(I guess I'm speaking selfishly...because I don't get VS!)

I've heard rumblings from the dbsforums.com Sports Forum (of which a couple of members here are also members there) that NBC has already let him go. NBC apparently plans to do the studio shows next season on-site from the game they'll be carrying, and Pierre McGuire will handle hosting chores as well as heading back to ice level during games.
I wonder if McGuire will handle regular studio wraps (news and highlights from other sports--they could easily fold those in from New York).

No, they haven't, that's true. But at least NBC doesn't have the NBA deal overshadowing it.

It seems funny to me that with Costas and now Michaels on the payroll, they can't get one or both in on the hockey coverage. It would feel far more big league if they did. At least they imported Don Cherry for a couple games.

Actually, I'm fine with Clement anchoring in the studio; he does a great job. And frankly I like my hockey without references to 1800s baseball players.

Ain't worth the money. Seriously, does anybody watch or not watch a sporting event because of broadcast talent anymore? I thought those days went out with Monday Night Football.
Also, Messrs Costas and Michaels are not on a "do anything for the network contract", they're on a "for X million a year I will do the following. Anything extra is a renegotiation." When ABC had Michaels do the NBA, he got more money.

FSN? Maybe?
I also don't think NBC is treating hockey more than a fourth-class citizen either. If CNBC can air game shows, why can't Bravo or any of the other NBCU stations show hockey games?
I'm thinking that Madison Street doesn't really care for hockey and thus gives no real place for it.

FSN has a bunch of regional presences, and no single national one, despite what Van Earl Wright might think. It would be a step down.

Call me nuts, but I'd much rather listen to the Westwood One announcers of Sunday/Monday night football than John Madden and Joe Theismann.
I also can't stand ESPN's tennis coverage in part because of Pat McEnroe's conflict of interest that causes him to be dishonest regarding his Davis Cup players, and would switch to, say, Eurosport if it were possible to get their coverage here in the States. (At least we get the US Open Mix on DirecTV, although USA are better at covering more matches than ESPN, who give us the same three or four stars over and over and over....)

I don't think yer nuts. Theismann is utterly insufferable, and I watched a little of the Sunday night game last week, and Madden's been REALLY off. Like, more than usual. He's refined "standing the obvious" to an art form. If I wasn't basking in the Glory of HiDef I would have turned it off.

Madden's ridiculously obvious statements always provide a good chuckle for me...okay, replace "chuckle" with "gut-busting laugh". :-P
It's Andrea Kraemer that bugs me. Someone needs to tell her that the sideline interviews are not BaBa WaWa material (i.e. last night's interview with Ben Roth...Roeathlis...Roethlis...the starting QB for the Steelers), and should be quite soft with questions.
/Love the SNF fanfare though...very Roman gladiator-esque

You won't get any argument from me on either point you two made. Madden's been off for at least a couple years now (last year he had his good and bad points, but it wasn't nearly his best). Theismann may be a pisspoor color commentator, but I still say ESPN got rid of the wrong color guy (not to say that the whole booth doesn't need to be junked).
(Hell, Fedya, give me Harry Kalas and any of the non-Boomer Esiason Westwood One color guys.)
/wonders how this wormed its way into a GSN ratings discussion, but isn't complaining

Don't know about football, because I usually don't watch. But it's no surprise that GSN is trotting out ancient warhorse Millionaire in prime time again. Another possibly encouraging note is a new season of High Stakes Poker, supposedly GSN's highest rated show (http://\"http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6458874.html?display=Breaking+News\") in second quarter, 2007. Okay, full disclosure: it's also my favorite show on the network. The premiere of the fourth season featured a hilarious hand between the two nicest guys you'll ever meet. SPOILER ALERT: You can read about the hand here (http://\"http://uk.pokernews.com/news/2007/8/high-stakes-poker-4.htm\").

"(Phil) Hellmuth kept quiet……for about half a minute." There's a first time for everything.

Odd thing I noticed about the show - besides Hellmuth's relative restraint, which gradually wore off - was that GSN didn't post the win percentages for a lot of hands. At first it was a little disconcerting, but I actually found the lack of percentages made me concentrate on the gameplay a little more. Don't know if it was just a glitch or a planned departure from usual TV poker.
