Title: TV Theme Songs
Post by: TimK2003 on August 21, 2006, 10:12:41 AM
Spent some time over at T.Q's theme site over the weekend, and came across the theme for The Peoples Court.  Though PC is not a game show, the theme itself (EDIT:  The opening rift), IMHO, should have been used for a game show (like a "Dirty Rotten Cheater" type show.

Any other non-game shows you can think of that had a theme good enough to be used a game show fodder?

Lemme tell you, you haven't truly experienced the theme from The People's Court until you've heard it....as porno music.

No, I'm not joking.

"This...is the plaintiff. <slapslapslapslapslap>"

Didn't even fit in context, either (as all good pr0n music should not)...if my memory serves, it was a nice young lady receiving a vigorous rogering over a sawhorse in a barn. :)

Heard the People's Court music. The porno bridge is strictly comedy.

As for non-game themes, I remember downloading a "PM Magazine" theme from Brian Karimzad's site. Very catchy (it's the 1980 theme, for the record).

I have some more that I'll add when I get the chance.

I remember it in the movie "Barbara Broadcast," circa 1978, which I saw due to my interest in, ummm, broadcasting.  It was used in a disco scene which led to a staircase, etc.  Neither Randy West was in that one as I recall.

I think a lot of the Sports anthology music of the '70's would have been right at home on a game show; a good number of '70s talk show themes fit as well.

I have three:
* The theme used during the early 1980s for The CBS Sports Spectacular.
* Don Kirschner's Rock Concert
* He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Okay...

-Entertainment Tonight's first two themes (clips on YouTube)
-T.J. Hooker
-The first Knots Landing theme
-Some of the early Dallas themes
-Mid-80s PM Magazine theme (also on Karimzad's site)
-First SNL theme (actually the second version of the first version, redone around 1976)
-Second Cagney and Lacey theme
-Vega$ (Robert Urich, not the NBC show)
-Dick Van Dyke Show (for a 60s game show)

Finally, from the World of Soap Opera Themes, the theme from a very short-lived show called Kings Crossing...and yes, I know too damn much about TV :-P

Mission: Impossible (1960s version, perfect for a modern Beat the Clock remake)
The David Letterman Show (his 1980 daytime show)
SCTV (Both non-Spike Jones themes)
The New Dick Van Dyke Show (1970s)
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour
The Flip Wilson Show

Tank! ( Cowboy Bebop opening): For some reason I can see this as the theme to Card Sharks. It does have that casino/lasvegas feel to the music.

Donahue: not sure about the 1980s version of the music, but the 1990s theme could serve a purpose for a simple "quizzer"

ESPN Sportcenter: Maybe for an Edgy gameshow of some kind, but definitely something in your face.

Yogi's Tresure Hunt: OK you're prolly cringing at this one, but I thought this had some gameshow quality to it. Somthing you could jive to. OK, maybe not so much as a regular gameshow, but prolly for a kids gameshow.

Fifteen (Nickelodeon).

Thata 'bout it.

Three, if you count the Russ Little syndication repackage theme (which is probably the most game show-ish of the bunch).

I'll reach over to the UK and would think that the bouncy theme music for "60 Minutes" (no, not that--the BBC1 local news wraparound show that replaced "Nationwide") could be used for a more upbeat show from that era.  I'd even say "Nationwide"'s "Good Word," but the French horns cut down on the suitability.

I see that and raise you. "Right to Reply" would probably make a good one.

I've got a few British themes that could make good GS themes----"Dempsey and Makepeace", "Return of the Saint" [probably the most GS-sounding on the list] "Big Match" [I had the 80's theme in mind, but the 70's theme wouldn't be bad], maybe "The Bill" [sans police siren at intro], "Grandstand", and there's probably a lot more....

I could see the last part of the theme (ending with the "DA-duh-DA, DA-duh-DA!" bit) being the perfect cue for the part where the end game/bonus round ends and a new contestant enters the stage.

One of SCTV's closing themes was used as the theme to Academic Challenge here in Cleveland in the 70s and 80s.  I couldn't tell you which theme it was, but I'd venture to say it's the syndication theme Mark mentions above.

Not really a tv theme used for a game show, but a real song used for a theme. On our local cable access channel in Newfoundland, Canada, there was a show called Trivia Plus which aired in the early-mid 90s. The theme was an edited version of Nightlife by Spyro Gyra. When it picks up in the middle of the song, it is very game showy.

A weird story about the theme. I liked it so much i was trying to find enough tapes of the show to rebuild the theme in its entirety, but later found out it was a real song, and i already had it on a cd.

Crazya heh

Not game-show related, but I did the same thing not long ago...I was busting my hump, upon learning of an obscure Duran Duran release called "Burning The Ground" (a megamix of their 80's hits, released to promote the Decade album, though it does not appear on it) to find the video, only to learn that I had it on a DVD compilation I had received for my birthday a couple of months before. :)

Taking this idea in reverse, the TTTT80 theme sounds like it belonged on early ESPN.

Something else just came up:

Back in college, our radio station had on the carted "playlist" (in quotes, since we were a "free-form" station, but the cartridges were there to try to get the jocks to play new releases) was an instrumental by, IIRC, Barry Miles and Silverlight called "The Travelers."  One of the DJs one day described it as something you might hear on "TPIR"--and it did have that sort of 70s Kalehoff-ish quality to it, as an uptempo, light pop-jazzy sort of piece with synthesizer as the lead instrument.

I used the Moody Blues' "Question" as the theme when I played, appropriately, Go with some friends. An instrumental version of that would serve almost any show well.

Going through some of my "TV's Greatest Hits" CD's...

For those who remember "One Day At A Time", the instrumental version of the theme (which was used as the credits rolled) would make a pretty decent game show theme.

As would the first theme used in the series "CHiPS".  The 2nd "disco-ized" theme -- used during most of the show's run -- could be a contender as well.

I was producing a play in the 90s that had a game show taking place in it.

We used this music as the "game show theme" (nobody here in Aus would have recognised the music, so we got away with it)... so yeah, great minds think alike

As long as we've veered away from TV themes for a bit...

I always thought the instrumental bridge from Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" sounded an awful lot like "Bob and Merrill's Theme" from The Hollywood Squares.

How about the original ABC World News Tonight theme that was used from 1978 to about the late 1980's or early 1990's? It was composed by Bob Israel, of Score Productions ,the same man who did the music for many Goodson-Todman shows.

That WNT theme has been redone several times since its introduction in 1978 after the Reasoner-Walters mess ended, and has been redone recently when Charles Gibson moved over from Good Morning America to WNT.

Speaking of anything from ABC, I think the original 1979-late '90s variation of the theme song from 20/20 sounded like it could be something used as a GS theme.

Also, I add in:

The NBA on CBS theme from 1982-90 also sounded like it could've been something else as well.

The John Davidson Show's theme song also could of sounded like an '80s GS theme in a way, b/c take out the vain opening credits and just listen closely to the theme song, I swear that it sounded like something from the '80s.

I heard it was a modified version of the one NBC used. And it shouldn't go away, it's one of the all-time great sports themes. I bought NBA Showtime for the Dreamcast almost entirely because it used the music and NBC's graphics package. (Okay, the fact that I'm an old-skool NBA Jam addict might have had something to do with it, too.)

Yeah, I thought Magnum, P.I. sounded like it could be a GS theme in a way as well!

The first version by Ian Freebairn Smith does sound like it could be used as b/g music for a gs theme.

But the Mike Post theme, even more as gs theme!

Speaking of themes by Mike Post...

I think to some extent his theme song from L.A Law could sound like a bit of a gs theme and his theme song from Hill Street Blues sounds like it could also be bg music as well, too.

And as for the NBa on NBC theme, I kinda like it, but it won't quite as much hold a candle to the NBA on CBS theme in the '80s, though. But, the NBA on NBC theme lives on in my Chicago News Sports whenever they're showing highlights of the Bulls games, though.

Anybody remember the old NBC NFL Football theme they used in the mid-70's (the days when the NBC banners that they'd hang in the stands were red on a white background and looked nothing at all like any other NBC logo or font at the time)?

They used that blocky, serif font for all their sports in the early 70s...you can see it very well in the NFL films shot of the Franco Harris "Immaculate Reception." As I remember, they'd play the first part of the music, then the letters would form from lines flying across the screeen to an electronic background, then back to action and music.

If I remember correctly, the music was called "Don't Turn Away."

80s synthesized theme to Guiding Light used around 87 or so. Also the early 80s version could be used for alternate cues for prize descriptions. Others that come to mind are themes to Bizarre with John Byner, John Davidson Show from 1980-81ish (80stvthemes), The Bob Crane Show from 75-76 i believe, Bob Newhart Show. I second the PM Magazine cues as well. Some of those cues would have been great MG think cues.

Also I love the level one theme to the NES game "Blaster Master" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKno6qPQEJg (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKno6qPQEJg\") )  Back when I was young and foolish (well, more foolish than I am today) I had this in mind as the theme to a "Millionaire" knock-off netgame I dreamed up called "Million Dollar Madness.  And I still love it as a potential game show theme

Emergency! was one of my favorittes from the 70's.  Some of its dramatic & tense cues could fit in with shows like Millionaire or even Deal or No Deal(if it weren't for its own theme being used).

And not necessarily a TV show per se, the ABC movie themes may've been used as theme or prize/bumper cue music.

two soap themes come to mind:

The first theme to "Texas" and the "Another World" theme that ran most of the 80's.

Good choices! They're both Score compositions, if my memory serves. I always thought that "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" would've made for a interesting game show theme. For those who don't know, it was the theme to Don Cornelius and his "SOOOOOOUUUUULLLL TRAIN"!

I have been catching up with "FlashForward" on Hulu and the end title theme is quite dramatic-- I wondered whether it was a GS composer that wrote it.

Not sure whether the end title actually plays on the ABC broadcast since I've never watched the show "live," only on Hulu.

Here's Mine

- Solid Gold Theme (Confirmed that the 1983-84 Theme which is sung by Marilyn McCoo) (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viorCHhfewg\")
- Miss Teen USA 1988 Opening Number - It's Gonna Be My Night Tonight (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVdt2XasbYQ\"), that will work as a game show theme

One of MFSB's other cuts, "Sexy", was a prize cue on the 1980 "Let's Make a Deal", IIRC.

Speaking of MFSB, their cover of "K-Jee" (from the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack) would've also made for an excellent game show theme.

/Yes, I'm a Philly Soul fan (The 70's music styling, not the arena football team).

There are a million songs that would made great game themes, but some did make the cut and are probably only remembered in that context. Do you think anyone would have remembered Silvetti's "Spring Rain" if it weren't also the theme song to "The Love Experts"?

Au contraire, I heard that song long before I knew it was on "Love Experts."  It was a top 40 hit and I used to hear it as a commercial music bed.  Having it on a Bill Cullen show just made me enjoy it even more!  How about "Stomp" by Brothers Johnson or "Ai No Corrida" by Quncy Jones?

I am thinking more about two action series, and while what I have read sounds really good, these two come to my mind:
1) The Theme from "The Rockford Files" (Perhaps for a 70s or 80s game show).
2) The Theme from "MacGyver".  Now this sounds more like a game show theme than an adventure series theme.

Yeah, I knew it quite well too.  It used to be used in the background while describing hockey highlights quite frequently back then.  Also, Global TV in Toronto used it as the theme to their old "Sports Probe" show that aired weekly.

I know it hit the top 40 in Billboard but I don't ever recall hearing it on the radio.  I found a sealed copy of the album for 69c at Record Theatre in Buffalo in the early '90s.  Let's just say that was an easy purchase!

On my amateur production of "Go!" I used an appropriate choice from the Moody Blues: "Question." The melody sounds like something you'd hear after winning an end game of some sort.

Speaking of Soul Train, I always thought that the original Soul Train theme would've made a great game show theme for a game show that aired roundabout 1968 - 1971.

Seconded.

Also, while not a TV theme Secret Base Zone Act 1 (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ap9wDxCl_4\") from Sonic Advance seems fitting.  I can especially hearing that opening part being used as "going to commercial" music.

There's a production piece being used on promos for the Tru-tv show It Only Hurts When I Laugh that is just screaming to be used for a cheesy 70s-style game....Password All-Stars, Stumpers, Three For The Money... you could probably come up with a dozen easy....

Both themes to The Bob Newhart Show, the 1970s version, some great tunes by Patrick Williams, who apparently did most of the MTM 70s sitcoms (except for WKRP).

The first rendition has a piano breakdown that could be used for a cue along the lines of a contestant intro. The closing five bars would make a sweet victory cue, and remind me a lot of the closing stinger for the contestant intro on TJW.

Apparently the second theme was part of a 3-minute track called "Home to Emily". (http://\"http://tvpmm.com/documents/106.html\") This version is jazzier and makes a nice prize cue for something along the line of a stereo or home furnishings. The version used on the show was faster, although both are snazzy.
